1. What was the last book you read (or are currently reading)?
Last read manhwa: On My Way to Meet Mom, would recommend! It's a 30-chapter story about an orphan boy in a post-apocalyptic world (where there are more aliens than humans) who discovers the concept of family one day and sets out to find it. Very comforting because the boy is so ordinary! He is small and round and human and that is enough reason for him to be deserving of love. It's gen through and through, which I like, and acknowledges that gender and gendered family roles are human constructs, which I also like. And the character designs are so good!!! Beautiful fantasy elements too, like whales in the sky.

Last read book: A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid, an 80-page essay about Antigua, post-colonialism, white tourism, and global power dynamics. Hits pretty close to home and written quite lyrically. Would also recommend!

Currently reading: The Fellowship of the Ring audiobook (narrated by Andy Serkis)—I'm not sure how sustainable the audio format is for my attention span but it got me further than all past attempts to read the text with my eyes. I now see the appeal of Tolkien. I still can't visualize anything, though...

2. What was the last movie you watched?
This morning's groupwatch—we meant to watch the Journal with Witch live action movie, but the subs were machine-translated from Chinese which was painful, so we switched to 100 Meters on Netflix. It's about what running means to athletes, the years and years of training and self-doubt all for these races which are over in 15 seconds, and what those 15 seconds mean. On paper: good concept! I can see this being a nice, thoughtful manga. In practice, it had some really interesting textures and breathtaking moments, but I thought the storytelling was poor and did not maximize the animated form. None of the characters also ever really have inner lives, and because of that, the main character's speech at the end feels unearned.

3. What television series are you currently watching?

Loving Strangers (cdrama): I stopped watching this for a while and then got back to it because I was feeling tired and 委屈, and this show is nothing but characters who are tired and 委屈.

How Dare You!? (cdrama): 14 eps in, I don't have very strong feelings about it but it's a group watch and there are enough interesting plot points that I'd like to see through. The show is kind of uneven, some sets of episodes are paced better than others. I really liked the first ED so I was very sad that they changed it to the more "serious" one.

Pursuit of Jade (cdrama): One of my oomfs said this got her out of a cdrama slump and true enough I managed to watch 2 eps in a row. XD I am not very enthused that the FL, a small village butcher, is Secretly Proficient in Martial Arts and has Secretly Important Parents (deceased).

Witch Hat Atelier (anime): So beautiful and worth the wait! Not sure how much the anime covers and how long I'll stick with it, but I'm pleased that its impact is mainstream enough that I have a common interest with IRLs again.

4. What are some of your favorite blogs or communities online?
My fav community is the HnG server where we groupwatch non-HnG-related things and people share pictures of their local birds and flowers. :') Also the gaming channel in the NiF server, it's like the only channel I check haha. Also all the bookish people in my Dreamwidth and Storygraph circles because how else do I know what books exist! I read A Small Place because I saw two of my Storygraph mutuals (one of them is, naturally, aartichapati) finish it recently.

My favorite blogs are mostly defunct. </3 Some old blogs that are still up but no longer active: Lazy Evaluation Ranch, a personal farm blog; Hanzis Matter, a blog "dedicated to the misuse of Chinese characters in western culture"; Source Code in TV and Films; and Said the Gramophone, a music blog (still updates every December).

Twitter and Bluesky... I also have an Instagram but as usual I've stopped checking it 😂

POSTING HERE SO I DON'T FORGET BECAUSE both their band name and album title are not the most searchable lmfao but oh my God this band!!! Their languages!!! Their songs!!!

Fom their Wikipedia article:

Collage (Chinese: 珂拉琪; pinyin: Kē Lā Qí; Japanese: コラジ) is a Taiwanese band that released their first album in 2021,[1] with two members: lead singer Natsuko Lariyod, who is of mixed Hakka and Amis ancestry, and Hunter Wang, who is of Minnan descent. Rather than use Taiwanese Mandarin, the band focuses on producing music using Taiwanese, Japanese, Amis and English. They incorporate indigenous people's music into their compositions.

I haven't heard their entire album yet but I definitely got teary just listening to 這該死的拘執佮愛 and 萬千花蕊慈母悲哀 even though I could understand next to nothing... to be honest, I feel like half of the emotion was from them having such a moving and fanviddable sound... And the rest is the songs being in (Taiwanese) Hokkien, which I suppose always hits hard even when they're incomprehensible to me. The titles of the later songs in the album seem to be Amis so I'm even more intrigued, especially since they are English-subbed on their Youtube channel. And the album and song covers are pretty, which is always a plus!

I also love how the Youtube descriptions have both the hanzi (like the actual Hokkien hanzi, not the Mandarin translation, which is often the case) and the Hokkien romanization. :')

I'll probably forget this because Hokkien will never be a readable language for me, but:

袂: bue (in Mandarin... 不 or 不會?)

ETA: Finished the album. I have to say that there’s a song that appears to be about Japanese soldiers, which I have a knee-jerk revulsion to, regardless of whatever the context is. But it’s otherwise still a great album! Interesting that the Amis songs are often mixed with Japanese.

I’ve also only ever listened to Laufey casually on music platforms and had no inkling of her MVs, marketing, internet presence, or audience (though my brother was definitely in the concert that was shown in the video—PH crowd is the best crowd ahaha), so it was really cool to see the ~story~.

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999

Extremely low-stakes josei anime about a college student who is fresh from a breakup and becomes friends with a group of gamer nerds of various ages. I read the manga and watched the anime--it's tropey and rocky at the beginning (I hated the whole ESPION arc in the manga, it was just too dumb and contrived for even me), but I really enjoyed Akane as a protagonist! She's so normal and girlfriend-coded and socially adept. Part of her character development is learning from past relationships and maintaining a new relationship without changing herself or her partner too much, and also learning to not be too afraid to inconvenience her partner. I love how gaming is a very personal and social activity to her, and I hope there's some payoff for how she refuses to change out of the default/starter equipment. XD But even if there isn't, I'm still happy because she's happy. XD

In contrast, Yamada is kind of a cryptid and not very interesting on his own. In fact, he was kind of annoying at first lol, but I really enjoyed watching him constantly seeking out Akane in his own ways. It was sweet and what she deserves~ (I do also project more on him than on Akane, because he embodies the fulfilled wish of being adopted by extroverts and chosen by a very cute and loving extrovert girlfriend.)

The anime episodes came out every weekend, and it was just this small dose of weekly fluff that I looked forward to and really enjoyed. Two weeks after it ended, the I Ship My Adversary X Me manhua resumed, so I haven't run out of weekly weekend fluff.

Takarazuka Revue: Casino Royale~ My Name Is Bond (online stream)
My first Takarazuka Revue experience, so I had no idea what to expect. The first act was fairly straightforward, and the second act... devolved into chaos. I liked the thing in the end (after the main story) where they reprise the numbers in increasingly extravagant outfits. Apparently it's a thing!

Recently

Gastropod
A podcast whose tagline is "Food with a Side of Science & History". It has a journalistic approach where they actually talk to experts instead of just regurgitating Wikipedia. I listened to the egg episode, which is how I found out that in some parts of the world the only available egg is chicken, and that quail egg is unusual and expensive. Which seems quite sad, lol.

Also listening to the second season of the Little Mushroom audiodrama which I'm enjoying much more than the first because of the music and the extra ~drama~. I just got to ep4 where they debuted the new ending theme and I love it!!! So much!!!

In other news, weather was unusually cool and rainy, but not too cold or rainy. For three whole days! We (household of 3) have been going through a loaf of bread (for dipping) a day as we go through our stash of tablea (traditional hot chocolate). By "we", I mean me. There's just something so transcendent about having your favorite hot beverage at the perfect weather. ;___; It's an increasingly rare experience, so I haven't felt this kind of full-bodied enjoyment in a while.

Happy Mid-Autumn!

Spent a fair amount of the weekend with family because relatives had flown in for a wedding the following day (my cousin's cousin). Also read 繁星, Bing Xin's collected poetry fragments, because Zhang Xincheng was doing a reading for the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala... ended up subbing it myself and reading the English translation (book link: A Maze of Stars and Spring Water), a worthwhile exercise since the original text was still pretty fresh in my head and I could follow along the translation choices. Posting the original text + translations here for my reference!

My translation:

Idk if this makes sense, but I consider myself more of a subber than a translator, so generally I don't think my "translations" hold up in text form haha. I love how the video format allows me to disregard form and line breaks, because as much as I enjoy reading freeform poetry I have nooooo understanding of the craft.

I don't really have any notes, other than me giving up on finding synonyms for "deep" so I subbed it with words for distance, and that the line 灿烂光中的休息处 is very much open to interpretation, so I went with the image that was in my head when I was reading it.

March was just a fog of Zhang Xincheng-related output and I can't be bothered to link them all here. It was also my cousin's wedding, so I spent some time low-key fretting over it. I got my booster shot and a hair cut, and then my sister-in-law tried one of those bubble dyes on me. My hair is so fine that she got to do 2 separate applications on me, but the color didn't really take haha. Due to logistical reasons, we actually ended up skipping the actual wedding (which apparently had several mishaps) and only attended the reception, which was an outdoor one and more intimate than I feared and expected. At one point the wind toppled down a small tree, which landed on a table (no one was hurt, so it was funny).

Turning Red (2022)
I'm not sure how much I enjoyed this one because I don't enjoy coming-of-age stories and this had all the coming-of-age beats, but it was CUTE and well-executed--the visual build-up and play on scale were masterful, as was every single beat of the boyband storyline. I was a lot more interested in the mother's generation, and loved how much backstory and personality was informed through the animation and the designs. It's really interesting to me because, though accessible to all, the movie inhabits a specifically millenial space, in between Mei's and Ming's generation as though we are both of them, and I felt this most at the bamboo forest scene towards the end.

I didn't realize it when I was watching, but I learned from this review (video/podcast format; h/t lunarflares) that the movie used a lot of color language to depict relationships. (I haven't finished that episode, it gets deeply personal among the hosts, but the general discussions happen in the first 30-60 minutes).

In terms of relatability, this definitely was not for me even though I recognized so much of Mei's teenagerhood haha. I think, partly, it's because of the setting: I was always an Asian among Asians, and while I have completely severed most of my connections, I grew up in Chinese communities. But also, I just was not Mei. XD And I had no desire to gyrate LMAO. But I did recognize so many people in Mei, which made her all the more enjoyable.

Who's the Murderer S7
Due to Deng Lun's tax evasion reveal, the puppet episode sequel that he was meant to be in was cancelled like... a day before it was meant to air??? I'm still mourning the set and the costumes and Qi Wei's appearance. They promptly aired the first part of the following episode (NZND as Old Boys) instead, but they... have not released the second half of the episode. Who's The Murderer and several other variety shows have suspended broadcast for two weeks after that. I'm not sure how much of it is related to Deng Lun, but it certainly feels huge; viewer comments that were initially sympathetic and understanding became angry the following week. (It certainly seems like they meant to release the episode, and were trying to, but something behind the scenes was happening. The "no episode this week" announcements were made around an hour before the scheduled airtime.

EPISODE 5 (which also had Deng Lun, pre-cancellation) WAS REALLY GOOD THOUGH!!!

Delicious Romance
Technically finished this on April, I just want to get this out of the way. XD

Main thoughts: I loved eps 1-6 and then 11-15, and in some ways I do love the messaging about still being a work in progress at 30; but sometimes the messaging didn’t fit the situation, and its perspective of work is still kinda… teenager-ish. I dislike most of Fang Xin's career storyline (which makes her relationship with her younger female coworkers antagonistic, instead of acknowledging that they're both victims of the corporate system and bad leadership), and eventually Liu Jing's. I... actually don't know how I'm meant to read Liu Jing. Emotionally it feels like she's meant to succeed, but logically, going by her conversations with her own parents and Song Chao's friend, it looks like she's setting herself up for failure. The latter would have been interesting to me, though, because I love the idea of having the freedom to fail.

The strongest relationship of this show was easily the Xia Meng/Wang Jichong storyline, a long-term couple that, due to their work and pandemic living conditions, broke up and had to learn to grow without each other. I feel that they could have pushed Xia Meng's growth and self-realization further since she has the highest amount of accumulated insecurities among the three characters, but the show is open-ended enough that I can accept it.

The best part was definitely ALL the child actors, from Wenwen (my favorite), to the child versions of the trio who were cast and directed so well I could see them in the adult versions and vice versa. And also the scene at the divorce registration queue which is what sold me to this show.

THIS SHOW CONTAINS: body/weight issues, fad diets and disordered eating, sexual harassment (several times, verbal and, at one point, physical), A LOT of fun meta about cdramas, a pointed portrayal about how marriage shouldn't be the default expectation from women, canon LGBT characters.

Currently:

Reading: a bunch of things but due to my focus/reading issues, I have temporarily dropped everything /o\

Playing: I spent 3 straight days losing myself in short mobile puzzle games (Monument Valley, and Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise) and just now resurfaced. XD

Watching: Starting Under The Skin (crime/forensics cdrama) next!

I spent parts of January trying to declutter both my room and my mind from the negative thoughts and urges I didn't want to carry into the new year, but didn't quite succeed. However! I managed to organize my cables/adapters, and have been clinging to the single habit of putting them away, even as I accumulate disorder everywhere else. It's nice to have that one thing, at least! And to be able to know where my earphones and chargers are.

(I also bought little jewelry pouches for my necklaces to prevent them from getting lost, tangled, or tarnished.)

Media I'm into these days:

我磕了对家X我的CP manhua is baaaaack with Vol.4 as of last weekend! So cute, so sweet, GYL so 委屈 and still happily pinching WYZ's cheek and patting WYZ's head. I don't follow a lot of manhua, but I think the ISMM one is extremely good. The art style is very pretty and the chapters dynamically rendered.

Legend of Hei S2 started this year and is about to end this Saturday! The ratio of episodes seems like half gaming mechanics dialogue (to fulfill Xiao Hei's mission, they have to play a VR game), half intense action sequences. Ep.39 was 12 whopping minutes of a fight scene, but so ramped up with tension I couldn't quite enjoy the cool assassin moments. There's so much I love about this season, especially Xiao Hei going full murder kitten who's adopted A-Gen as his older brother, and Shan Xin being the resident expert gamer. And there are, in fact, SEVERAL appearances from characters from the movie! Exciting times.

他们都说我遇到了鬼 (They All Say I've Met A Ghost): Reading this for superborb's book club. I didn't enjoy the first 5 chapters very much because I found the MC's PoV hard to get into, but I'm enjoying it a lot more now, at chapter 12! It's a 42-chapter danmei novel featuring a buff MC who lives and teaches in a haunted school and vehemently denies the existence of ghosts, and an exorcist ML who sometimes has to break the law to proceed with his ghostbusting. The MC's first ghost encounters are so annoyingly stupid, but they turn sweet and then bittersweet.

我五官缺你 (My Five Elements Lack You): Stopped at ch16, but hoping to get back into it! I have it mentally tagged as "fengshui boyfriends": it's a 113-chapter novel about a completely nice and ordinary MC who gets transmigrated into the body of a vile swindler. He is captured and put to work by a blind fengshui master ML. The book contains folk horror elements and has very webnovel-y pacing. I'm liveblogging this one on Goodreads so hopefully I won't forget my thoughts haha.
