Videogame Log

Don't really game anymore (especially because most of them give me motion sickness) but thought I'd take a page out of [profile] rionaleonheart's book and try to log all the games I can remember playing...

(Now playing: I Am Setsuna which is currently 70% off and which I'm liveblogging here.)

Ace Attorney Investigations 1
This was the one with blue badger horror, wasn't it?

Agent A
Fun puzzle game that I played on my phone, but I think it lacked accessibility features.

Apollo Justice Trilogy
Enjoyed the first and third games and found the second meh.

Bastion
My first Supergiant game and my favorite in terms of music and storytelling! It's one of the two platformers I've ever loved (the other is Threads of Fate).

Blazblue: Calamity Trigger
This came out at a time when I thought Guilty Gear was never coming back so of course I ate this up and enjoyed all the GG similarities+ AU-ness. Mained Noel.

The Bouncer
A short-lived affair. XD I got baited by Sion's character design, which was very stereotypical Tetsuya Nomura...

Brave Fencer Musashi (DNF)
???

Breath of Fire 3-4 (DNF)
I love dragon boys but hate puzzles. I learned the concept of sluice gates because of one of these!!!

Bust a Groove + Bust a Groove 2
The first game had the better songs, but the second game had Pander...

Chrono Cross
This remains the only game whose entire OST I would listen to. In retrospect, the plot was probably a mess but I was so obsessed omg. Did so many New Game+ runs just to get all the different endings.

Chrono Trigger
I have little to no memory of this game other than the general experience, but the "One among you will perish" prophecy was so revolutionary to me lol. Also, Frog's Theme > > >

Comic Zone (DNF)
I'm showing my age by including this... I mostly watched my brother play it, I think, but I don't know if he ever finished.

Darkstalkers
Morrigan and Lilith, you will always be legends.

Dead or Alive / Dead or Alive 2
The game that familiarized me with different fighting styles. XD I was a Kasumi / Ayane main (and I probably kinda shipped them?)

Disco Elysium
Beautiful but depressing. I couldn't deal with how cold the environment design was.

Disgaea (DNF)
I got stuck because I don't know how to build a party and most of the characters I create are archers, LOL.

Echo Nights (DNF)
THIS GAME'S CAMERA WAS SO BAD, I PLAYED FOR 20 MINS AND HAD TO SPEND THE REST OF THE DAY IN BED TO RECOVER.

Eiyuden Chronicle (DNF)
The Switch version is terrible. Loading times are too long, which makes random encounters unbearable. (Also I got stuck in a dungeon lmfao) I did like the castle building mechanic, it reminded me of the FFX sphere grid.

Fatal Frame (DNF)
Did not finish but boy, what a concept.

Fatal Frame 2 (DNF)
DNF, but my core memory was playing this with my cousins. At night. In my cousin's house. Which had creepy wooden corridors that were quite similar to this game... I hope they remaster this because I love stories about sisters and the ending theme for this was also so beautiful and emotional!

Final Fantasy VII (DNF)
Baby's first RPG... I named Cloud after myself (first name AND last name), so the dialogue was hilarious.

Final Fantasy VIII (DNF)
I just didn't vibe with this, I think it's because the characters looked too old lol. Made it to Disc 2, I think? I listened to the soundtrack a lot, though.

Final Fantasy IX
The only Final Fantasy game I've attempted to replay multiple times. Also probably my favorite Final Fantasy OST.

Final Fantasy X
This is the fandom that exposed me to internet racism HAHAHA. Anyway, yay for voice acting and cool cutscenes! Interesting combat, LOVED the sphere grid (always funny to have Yuna deal 9999 damage as her staff bonks the enemy). I was very into the bittersweet ending and probably cried.

Final Fantasy X-2
Again, nice combat, fun dress spheres. I loved Paine and Baralai.

Final Fantasy XIII (DNF)
Loved the idea of playing a female lead, loved Fang and Vanille (and Fang/Vanille), but found the dialogue so cheesy, the game too linear, and the battle too difficult.

Final Fantasy XV
I remember only playing this because I was curious about the music but not exactly enthused... I was annoyed that I was in an all-boys party, and I found Noctis spoiled and annoying... And then Altissia happened and as annoyed as I was with how the game handled Lunafreya, I found myself on a one-way train to fandom, doing post-game just to hear more incidental dialogue between the boys. XD The music really was so good!!! The ending destroyed me. This was the last game I was in a fandom for.

Final Fantasy Tactics (DNF)
The other Final Fantasy game that I've attempted to replay multiple times but I fear I am too dumb for strategy games.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (DNF)
Baby's first Switch game... Would you believe I spent 85 hours on the Golden Deer route only to DNF it. There were days I thought about continuing it but the thought about having to run around and talk to every single person in the monastery in between battles fills me with so much rage I just can't.

Genso Suikoden (DNF)
Waiting on the remaster so I can finish it this time!

Genso Suikoden 2
Baby's first fandom community...

Genso Suikoden 3
I loved this and the manga so unironically. I really liked the complexity of Chris and Hugo's relationship. (My OTP was Jacques/Aila btw.)

Genso Suikoden 4
I shipped one-sided Aldo x Ted so hard...

Genso Suikoden 5
Loved the aesthetic! And the Roy + MC fanart... My favs were Shigure and Sagiri from the Oberon Detective Agency + Richard.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
From this entry: Even though I ended up still having questions about the plot, the twists in the last act really stuck the landing and got me in the feelings. I also really liked the way it shows how animals, humans, and ghosts have very different perspectives on life, deaths, and attachments... And the overall design and experience were pretty great, even though I was too dumb and impatient for this game. XD

Grandia (DNF)
Justin and Sue were annoying... Fiona was cool... My one memory of this is "Justin, you pervert!"

Grandia 2
Elena and Millenia, dual heroines!!! ♥ Also this game made me experience some weird friendship drama because I basically went off the grid to play it (which is business as usual, with summer vacations), and a friend took my slow responses to "what are you doing?" text messages SO personally hahaha. (We are no longer friends.)

Grandia 3 (DNF)
I don't even remember who the characters are...

GRIS
A work of art. GORGEOUS storytelling, gorgeous music, but I wouldn't play it again (because I hate platformers lol). I just Youtubed the "real" ending scene. XD

Guilty Gear X
Played this on a PC, I didn't know fighting game music could be so good.

Guilty Gear XX
This was the most obsessed I've been in a fighting game. I sank 100+ hours on this. (I was a Millia main.)

Guilty Gear X... something
IDK which one but one of the newer versions for PS4. I think the one where Ky and Sol had some sort of lovechild??? And it was missing some of the original characters.

Hades (DNF)
Technically a DNF, though I've beaten Hades once... My save file is stranded in my brother's Switch...

Hatoful Boyfriend
THIS BROKE ME.

Kingdom Hearts (DNF)
I loved the concept SO much (Disney characters? Final Fantasy AUs??? Sign me up) but the camera angles...

Kingdom Hearts 2
Camera movement was marginally more manageable, and I was immediately invested in Roxas and Namine. Axel and Riku's storylines landed too. But probably what I remember most about KH2 was the existence of an Axel fanvid set to Hips Don't Lie by Shakira.

Kingdom Hearts 3
I played this solely for the theme song and hated every moment!!! I'm not really a KH fan so most of the plot did not make sense to me and none of the emotions resonated and the gameplay was a total slog. I have never regretted getting or playing a game so much in my life.

Legend of Dragoon (DNF)
The English translation was SO bad. The battle system was pretty fun but I was terrible at it. Finished Disc 3 and then ???

Legend of Legaia (DNF)
For some reason this was a core memory, even though I couldn't have made it far in the game.

Legend of Mana (DNF)
Again, never got far in the game, but for some reason I keep seeking out the soundtrack for this. It's on my Switch wishlist, but I don't think it's finishable for me... I just want to hear the music and see the little rabites.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
A classic straightforward fantasy game with voice acting and good music!!! The betrayals were so life-changing at that time. Spent hours and hours replaying the boat scene so I could write down the lyrics to the song... My ship was Jessica/Kyle, though I'm not sure Kyle's characterization aged well. Also, I heard the English translation had a lot of pop culture references? But they definitely flew over my head.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (DNF)
This just felt like a rehash of Lunar:SSSC.

Mega Man 8 (DNF???)
Not sure how far I got but omg such memorable bosses!

Mega Man X4
Did I even finish this??? I think I might have, for love of Iris/Zero AND THIS OPENING SONG, WHICH DIDN'T HAVE TO GO SO HARD (CW for the Nazi salute, which they removed in the English release):

Monument Valley
It was all well and good until they gave me the ability to manipulate and rotate space 💀 I was also devastated when my totem friend could not follow me into the ocean.

Ni No Kuni
Playing one Ni No Kuni game is enough, I don't need another... But it was nice to have a classic-styled JRPG in the 2010s.

NieR: Automata
Oh man the gameplay was not for me (after the "first" playthrough I started leaving the battles to AI) but this was like... the last JRPG I was invested in. The worldbuilding and storytelling were so unique, the emotional punches hit so hard, and A2 was so attractive... And the ending credits were an unreplicable experience.

Parappa the Rapper
I played Um Jammer Lammy first, so I mostly treated this as bonus content.

Parasite Eve
Everything I know about New York City, I learned from this game. You get to fight dinosaur skeletons in the museum!!! THE EVE IN YOU WILL AWAKEN.

Parasite Eve 2
I was so obsessed with this I breezed through my college biology class several years later. This was my Cells At Work.

Persona 3
This game was so formative for my design aesthetic. The OP was just so iconic and the concept of Evokers was so edgy I lived for it. Anyway, I had senpai bias (Mitsuru, Akihiko, and Shinji) and I love that Koromaru gets his own little SEES armband...

Persona 3: FES
I hated Tartarus SO MUCH in P3, but for some reason I found FES therapeutic. I used to play it to destress from schoolwork. I was also very into the Aigis-Metis relationship...

Persona 4
Probably my favorite Persona game in terms of plot and thematic execution. The concept of the Midnight Channel was just *chef's kiss* and I loved the murder mystery format!!! In this, my fav was Naoto and I had kouhai bias (Naoto, Kanji, Rise). I don't like child characters so this game couldn't make me love Nanako no matter how hard they designed her to be lovable, sorry.

Persona 4 Arena
A Persona fighting game developed by the creators of Guilty Gear? This was the collab of my dreams. Mitsuru step on me ♥

Persona 5
My favorite Persona in terms of aesthetic and design, though the first episode was SO heavy and stressful... The Phantom Thief motifs were perfect for me and so was the music and the dungeon design. Makoto's Persona reveal was something I wish I could experience for the first time again. I think this is the one where I genuinely loved all of the characters, except for Morgana (even though I loved all the cat shenanigans!)... My favorite is undeniably Yusuke.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy
Definitely a favorite.

Pocket Fighter
WHEN WILL THEY REMASTER THIS IT'S THE BEST FIGHTING GAME.

Pyre
I always try to sell this as "purgatory basketball" but I have yet to convince anyone to play it. XD The sound design was INSANE. My mind was blown over how the ending theme lyrics reflect your chosen gender and the people you've liberated. Also, I loved my orb girlfriend. ♥

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
This was SO cute and charming!!!

Rival Schools
My other favorite fighting game (besides Guilty Gear)... I was so invested in the characters, their storylines, and their various weapons/fighting styles!? The joy of playing normal school kids is unparalleled. I think I was a Hinata main but I'm not sure.

Samurai Shodown
Not my fav but I liked the characters for this too!!! Nakoruru. ♥

Shadow Hearts
Loved this, though I can't remember why. Yuri was such a fun main character, though.

Shadow Hearts 2
Loved this too, especially since the historical characters were more familiar to me. The ending plot twist (Karin) was so wild for me and I ate that complicated relationship all up!!!

A Short Hike
Cute and sweet! Gave me motion sickness, but thankfully it was very short.

Star Ocean: Second Story (DNF)
Didn't finish but was close. I loved Ashton and his dragonly disasterness soooooo much. I don't have the patience for the PA system anymore, so I'm not sure I can do another Star Ocean game.

Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time
I had the biggest crush on Albel and shipped him with Nel. XD My defining memory was getting lost in a dungeon and spending a stupid number of hours retracing everything... These days I'd just DNF. Even though I played this more recently than Star Ocean 2, I have like... zero memory of the plot, other than vague recollections of being on a spaceship and the last boss having wings that looked like Mickey Mouse hands. I don't even remember the name of the main character??? I only remember Maria...

Thousand Arms
I'm pretty sure I finished this... Anyway, this sure was an era. Again, a game that is memorable for its opening song, which put Ayumi Hamasaki in my radar. The Century Gothic really worked for me at that time lololol.

Threads of Fate
The only platformer I truly enjoyed! I liked having split PoVs but only loved Mint's route (especially because I love sisterly conflicts). Did not care for Rue.

Transistor
Loved the concept of being a voiceless singer with a lover who has nothing left but his voice, the musical storytelling, and the gameplay (which actually gets easier as you go along). This game gave me all the feelings but the worldbuilding didn't really work for me, in part because you had to read the character profiles to understand what was going on with everyone and the UI wasn't very readable. I think I played this when it was briefly free on the PS3/PS4?

Um Jammer Lammy
This was so fun and trippy haha! She's on the border--nOOOOOOW!

Valkyrie Profile (DNF)
GREAT STORY CONCEPT but too difficult for me.

Vanguard Bandits
Banger OP that totally captures the anime aesthetic of the 90s/2000s. This is the strategy game of my heart even though I never made it to the "good" ending. Devlin was my beloved, but I think adult!me might feel differently.

Wild Arms 1 (DNF)
The opening will forever be a classic but I'm not built for puzzle-y dungeons.

Wild Arms 2 (DNF)
Very 2000s, loved it. I loved Lilka and her umbrella! I think I would attempt to replay this, it might have been the furthest I got in a Wild Arms game, I was so invested in the story.

Wild Arms 3 (DNF)
The only thing I remember about it is Jet Enduro...

Xenogears (DNF)
Are they ever going to remaster this? I'm not a mecha person but loved the character designs.

Xenosaga (DNF)
I bailed right at the beginning, lol.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)

I really enjoyed reading this entry! Absolutely delightful that Parasite Eve 2 helped you through your biology course.

But probably what I remember most about KH2 was the existence of an Axel fanvid set to Hips Don't Lie by Shakira.

I was immediately teleported into the past XD

FF8 I made it all the way through disc 2 and then disc 3 was broken, therefore I forever DNF-ed *sigh* I really liked triple triad! and the junction system was so broken, I loved it so much. Spent so much time tweaking. The concept of losing memories as you gain power was pretty cool to me too back then... but I spent so much of the game playing to get to the next Laguna section XD; (sorry Squall).

My fond memories of Fatal Frame is throwing the controller to my friends/my brother and then getting the controller thrown back at me whenever something scary is on the screen. My bro and I finished Fatal Frame 2 and 3 together but... those games were scary, and so so tragic!

I wasted a LOT of time just challenging NPCs to triple triad. idk why, I guess I really enjoy minigames like that XD

Yeah, the ending songs are so good. But the game was truly quite scary to play... The gimmick of needing to wait for the Fatal Frame to take the most damaging photos was cool though! (there were two memorable moments that still stick with me, one where we had to go into a tight crawl space and me and my bro were like, "you're it", not wanting to be the one navigating the character because we knew we'd get attacked there... and the other time was when we had to avoid being touched by the boss of the game and the characters were walking soooo slowly and it was very dark!)

I find it hard to concentrate on watching playthroughs too. So many games, so little time!
