Fandom: Pride and Prejudice
Pairings/Characters: Darcy/Elizabeth, Georgiana, Jane/Bingley
Rating: Teen
Length: 75k
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] anghraine
Theme: siblings, old fandoms, book fandoms, novel length, AU, family,

Summary: Without Lady Catherine's interference, a family catastrophe throws Darcy and Elizabeth down wildly different paths.

Reccer's Notes: This series is very much Darcy/Elizabeth, but they spend a lot of it going down separate paths. And on those separate paths, their closest relationships are with their siblings--Darcy and Georgiana, Jane and Elizabeth. I love the care that is taken with all of the different relationships in this story.

Length: 4k

Theme: siblings, AU, family

Summary: Bucky was the eldest of four.

Reccer's Notes: Bucky has four younger siblings, and in 2015 they are elderly, crotchety, and determined to go see Steve Rogers. Getting there is an ordeal, and what they find there is a surprise. I love the way the characters are so well-drawn and realistic, and I love the humor.

Life's busy etc BUT I've been getting back into various forms of dancing recently. I did a proper East Coast/Lindy Hop swing dance class or two in the last year or so (once as a follow, then as a lead), but I've made a vow this year to actually go out to a social dance at least once a month, and so far these past three months I've been successful!

Me: Internet, how long do dahlias take to sprout?
Internet: Could be two months, but probably only one. Maybe as little as two weeks if they're the right variety in the right conditions.

It has been ELEVEN DAYS. 7 out of 22 containers have little dahlia sprouts, and by "little" I mean the biggest one has FOUR LEAVES ALREADY. I cleared off a shelf in the utility room and snapped my one spare magnetic grow light to the shelf above, plugged it into a Christmas tree timer* in the hallway, and squeezed in all but 7 pots. (The four that had sprouted by yesterday are still on their succulent shelves, and the three I judge least likely to succeed are sitting on a box near the light for monitoring.)

I did a little garden tidying, but the ground is still too frozen for digging (despite the daffodils coming up everywhere, plus some red sprouts that must be tulips, yay my daffodil protection circle worked) so bad news for the boxes of cannas by the back door: they are headed for the garage tomorrow morning. If I have to cart them back and forth from the garage to the house to keep them from freezing overnight I will, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to insulate them enough that they can weather a few freezing nights on their own.

*All the lights have to be on timers, otherwise it's like Wei Ying's tomatoes in that one where Lan Zhan is a wolf and keeps judgmentally turning his plant lights on and off for him. I have absolutely thought to myself, "oh I turned the lights on late this morning, surely I should leave them on late tonight to make up for it!"

bluapapilio: rin and suguro from blue exorcist (aoeku sugurin)

Chapter 71:
Someone was watching Yukio half-kill himself.

lol at Rin calling Lewin a pervert for wanting to do things to his sword.

Rin comforting Konekomaru. :')

Rin: "I'll help, too. But it's for Suguro, not you." Hah. =P

Suguro was so badass playing that karuta game even if he got too into it and made a mistake. He's Lewin's apprentice now!

The SugoRin fistbump!

Chapter 72:
Aw, I love Konekomaru's app idea. And Suguro cut his haaair! He always looks good but I will miss the longer hair.

Geezus Yukio, jumping off a building? If someone sees you they're liable to put you in a ward and stop you from being an exorcist at all. 😭

As he was falling, he thought of Shiro, Shiemi and Rin.

As long as Yukio is afraid of his powers he's not going to get anywhere, but first he does need to know what they are. I just wish he had someone who knew.

Chapter 73: Lol I can't wait to hear Shiemi imitate Yukio in the anime.

Aw, I'm not a fan of romance in my shounen at all but I still found the confession scene cute.

Shura is missing and Mephisto wants the brothers to go to 'Aomori' to find her.

I'm definitely caught up to where I stopped in the anime now.

The first time I said this, it was filtered, so I'll say it again: So far I am enjoying being back! It's early days yet, but I feel like DW addresses a real craving I was having.

No profound new material today; I'm tired.

Yesterday I had a dentist appointment plus my weekly SCA meeting. It was a project night, a new person came, and we had some really nice conversation as we all introduced ourselves (and prompted each other about all the stuff we did) and tried to give some newcomer info. Unfortunately for our post-meeting restaurant trip, it was one of those nights Panera was out of everything; we all wanted warm soup but like everybody else in the county probably already had wanted warm soup, so I ended up resorting to the French Onion. It didn't taste bad, but not good enough to get again, plus it was a gamble; sometimes too much onion doesn't agree with my tummy, but I got away with it this time.

Then today I did my weekly-or-so Walmart pickup and got lunch from the local Senior Center; they were doing corned beef and trimmings for St. Patrick's day. I totally forgot to wear green, tho.

I've been thinking of doing like a read-along here, going through a light novel series I like bit by bit and posting about it. Honzuki (Ascendance of a Bookworm) is the most likely candidate, but if I wanted space for on-first-reading material I could do Weakest Tamer, or I'm also quite fond of Beware of Chicken (which is Canadian not Japanese but still essentially a webnovel-turned-light-novel).

Review copy provided by the publisher. Also the author is a friend.

This morning I wrote to another friend, "I've finished reading Amal's new collection, and now the only problem is how to write a review that's laudatory enough." "A good problem to have," my friend correctly noted.

Seriously, though. I've read most of these stories before, but when I came to each one, it was a matter of, "Oh, I loved this one!" rather than "Oh yeah, this one." There is a stylistic and thematic inclination to the stories that never rises to sameness. It's such a distillation of why I have been consistently happy to see these stories (and a few poems!) in the venues where they've appeared, for the years they've been appearing.

If you were hoping that this would be a source of new Amal stories, you'll have to keep waiting, this is the kind of collection that's a culmination of previous work rather than a revelation of new. But it's a beautiful slim volume, I'm thrilled to have it, I will press it upon my friends and relations, hurrah. Hurrah.

Ghosts of Meier & Frank

Meier & Frank Garment Bags
Meier & Frank Garment Bags

I’ve been working in the garage, trying to identify old stuff to get rid of (to make space for other stuff). There was a box of garment bags, and I figured I didn’t need those bags anymore. And then I realized I might have a use for a couple of bags – so I opened the box. Old garment bags, indeed.

It was with a wave of nostalgia that I unfolded two Meier & Frank garment bags. These bags were provided for free when I bought some dresses at the department store. I think I still have the dresses, as well.

Meier & Frank was erased as a brand – and converted to Macy’s – in 2006. I can’t believe Meier & Frank vanished 20 years ago. Has it really been that long? I grew up with the department store and have a lot of fond memories. (Like... the air doors at the Lloyd Center... and the escalators at the flagship store downtown... plus the restaurants... and the Christmas displays.) I walk through Macy’s all the time – but I still miss Meier & Frank – a lot.

This is what it means to be an old Oregonian. (Yesterday, I was telling my friend Debbie about growing up with Miller Paint in Portland. I could go on and on... U.S National Bank of Oregon... Alpenrose Dairy... J. K. Gill... Hung Far Low...)

Can I really let go of these garment bags?

I had trouble getting to sleep last night but I did manage to sleep until almost 5 this morning even though I think my son in law was moving around earlier than that. The dehumidifier in the basement (in the room next to where I'm sleeping) was running for much of the night. It has been running more over the last day or two because the humidity has risen, and it makes a very good white noise machine. (The wall between the rooms does not go all the way up to the ceiling.) It's a pity I have no control over when it runs, because when the humidity isn't really high it might run for a short time and then cut out, but in more humid weather it runs almost continuously, and I would be happy if it ran all night.

Yesterday I ran out of the yarn I've been using to crochet squares for a blanket (more is coming tomorrow), so I decided to use up some other yarn I've had on hand for a while by knitting a hat as that's all I've got enough for. I wanted to start with a magic circle (because I like knitting hats top down) but I couldn't seem to get the hang of it. I've used a cast on for knitting top down on hats or socks before, but it isn't a magic circle. With a magic circle you get an actual circle with a tail you can use to pull it tight so there is no hole on the top. I spent most of the afternoon looking at videos of people demonstrating this technique, but I don't learn well from videos. Eventually I found a non-video tutorial with pictures and was able to follow that. Everybody seems to have a slightly different way of showing and describing the magic circle, which is confusing for someone who is trying to learn it. Plus I couldn't find a tutorial for a left hander so I had to transpose as I went. My poor brain was very confused. However, with the picture tutorial, I think I've got it.

My Acer computer came back to life! I left it unplugged for about 10 days and then plugged it in and tried to turn it on, not expecting it to work. However, to my great surprise, it came to life almost instantly and has been working just fine since then. I'm very happy because it seems to connect to the (somewhat dodgy) basement wifi better than any other computer I've ever used down there.

Today is cloudy and cold.  At least the howling wind stopped.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

Many of the plants that were sprouting have died from the hard freeze.  :/  Some still look fine though.  At least some of the sprouts in my jug and tub greenhouses have survived.

EDIT 3/17/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/17/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a large flock of sparrows and two male cardinals.

I am done for the night.

Am still being harried by spam from those dodgy-sounding conferences of very little relevance to my actual interests, happening in v attractive places:

International Conference on Time Series and Forecasting (ITISE 2026) (wot is this even), Gran Canaria (Spain).

6th Current Issues in Business and Economic Studies (CIBES) Conference at the University of Valencia.

13th International Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (okay, is brushing somewhere in the region of Stuff I Have Worked On?) in Kyoto.

But really, YOY?

A new twist on this has appeared via my shiny new academic email address: really weird journals giving themselves out as academic that sound totally synthetic -

Journal of High Speed Networks (not as far as I can see associated with even one of the less esteemed academic journal publishers):

a forum in which researchers from academia and industry can address a wide range of topics related to high performance networking and communication and report findings on concepts; state of the art, emerging standards and technologies; implementations; running experiments; applications; and industrial case studies. Coverage can range from design to practical experiences with operational high performance/speed networks including communication network architectures; evolutionary networking protocols, services, and architectures; and network security.

Is this actually edited by a chatbot?

As, I suspect, is this one:

Invitation to Join Mesopotamian Journal of AI in Healthcare (MJAIH) Editorial Board. - there is in fact a website for the Mesopotamian Academic Press (I see they also publish Babylonian Journals of this and that.

Even without the complete mismatch to my actual realms of expertise here I am sceptical about this enterprise.
