Added Burning Houses & Hush Harbor by Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta to my reading rotation because I realized I could acquire it through Shopee. \o/ I've only gone through a few of the poems, which made me starkly feel that I was not smart or literary enough, but Temper/7 Down has sat in my brain for days and days and maybe that's enough. It's part of a section that's formatted as a series of crossword puzzle hints, so I guess it makes sense for me to still be trying to follow the emotional threads.

Here's the full poem, which I worked hard to format with html.
Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta, "Temper/7 Down"
Hellions in your novels balled fists
Inside trouser pockets. You never let
A belt lick welts on a child's thigh.

Barroom rakes, at the slightest libel Dream of triggers and knives.
You never put a wife in place
With a shake or a sharp word.
Stones were paperweights for Memos. Knives were cameos
Mounted on walls or tucked
In a safe. And pity the man
You would not hate, him you'd
Consecrate with your indifference.
Best was how you taught a child
To spit her rage like a catcher
To his mitt, and hurl with all
Her bile and length,
Neither glass nor stone,
Only the brittle shells
Of eggs her throw
Broke against the wall.
Temper: to see in red,
To lose control. But also
This: to curb, to hold.

I made a Justice in the Dark gifset based on the last three lines:
jitd gif: temper
+5 more gifs
to see in red,
to lose control.
but also this:
to curb,
to hold.

Creation notes:
  • I used a ripped paper texture for the big paper background, but for the paper strips—I was playing around and found that Resolve has a Paper Edges effect omggggggg

  • For the fonts—I was looking for a suitably distressed font and suddenly remembered Eduardo Recife's Misprinted Type. I wondered if his website was still up and it is! :D I've never really been able to incorporate his fonts/textures into my fanwork, but for this I used his Misproject font.

    Media

  • 啞舍 Ya She: Modern-day supernatural donghua about an antique shop owner and a doctor whose fate is tied with his. Not really a fan of the way women were written here—to its credit there were a lot of female characters, but they lacked agency and I was especially annoyed with the subplot with the doctor's patient. Cases were pretty hit-or-miss; my favorite was the Tong Puppet episode. Overall, this was better as a buddy watch than a solo watch, especially with [tumblr.com profile] daisydiversions "translating" the dog over voice call. :P

  • Cheese in the Trap: Modern-day college enemies-to-lovers manhwa where the ML has done a host of truly unforgivable things to the FL, due to a lack of empathy, lack of interest in considering the ripple effects of his machinations, and his own disdain for the FL. He kind of spends the present timeline trying to make up for it, knowing he can't, and fearing he'd lose the FL now that she's entered his orbit and become his world. That the romance is on the unhealthy side makes it more interesting, as does its depiction of socio-economic differences (ML VS everyone else). But the personal conflicts are dragged out—this comic has a brand of wish fulfillment that has all the college drama hashed out over a series of public classroom showdowns and having the crowd pick a "side". IDK why these college students are so invested in each other's lives, to the point of getting involved in the drama?

The best parts were the family storyline—the FL struggles with the pressure of being the eldest daughter; when she changes and asserts her feelings, her family changes with her. I loved watching Inho being folded into that bubble. And I really liked that one of the story arcs was about a gay couple going through the roughest patch of their relationship because of financial stress.

A fanvid about Pei Su's grief about his mom, with clips sourced from eps 1-15 of Justice in the Dark and a lot of emphasis on the lyrics. It's set to the Taiwanese song Mercy Mercy, Green Tara of Thousand Flowers by Collage, which I've been obsessed with since I first heard it. (Here's a journal page I did on the lyrics last year!)

    AO3 / Twitter

~Process~ video of the first 20 seconds (concept VS final)... Looking at it now I'm realizing that the "burning" transition in the draft version was better but oh well!!! I'm kind of happy with how the type turned out because it was so ugly at first that I got determined to finish this vid just to overwrite the memory of ugliness that kept playing in my mind lol. I've sorted out Resolve's subtitle issues btw! I just have to right-click the Timeline and set the timecode.

The lyric translation was adapted from the band’s own English translation; most of my changes were in the service of making them more self-explanatory (since there's a lot going on onscreen) and recontextualizing them for the characters/video clips.

And in the process of handling the text I not only felt closer to it, I also discovered that in Taiwanese Hokkien
language things个 is a traditional character, and means the same as in simplified Mandarin; apparently Taiwanese, which uses traditional script, recognizes 个 and 個 as separate words, with 个 (pronounced eh) being the general counter word, and 個 (pronounced ke) being a counter for months.

My mind was so blown by this discovery before it hit me one day later that this is probably also true in my dialect (in the sense that I have heard ko as a counter word for month, ie. chih-ko geh for "one month"), I'm just too illiterate to understand what's happening lololol.

Anyway I documented everything! The original Taiwanese lyrics, the band's translation, my edits (not all of them justifiable).all under the cut )

CW: quick cuts, a lot of moving text

    Spot the mistakes:
  • The painfully mismatched drop shadow and outer glow colors (because I kept changing the colors and forgot to update all the text effects when I settled on one) 😂
  • The layer I forgot to delete...
  • The misheard lyric, once again immortalized in hardsubs (really, I should just copy/paste lyrics next time)

In other news, I've broken out of the manhwa brainrot and fallen back into my awful habit of serially starting books:

  • The Thursday Murder Club: Ok but slower than expected + I'm not invested in the characters... I've actually gotten far enough that I feel like I'm trapped in a sunk-cost mindset... But I also really need to relearn how to finish books instead of starting a new one whenever I get restless lol.

  • The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry: Pretty cute, might continue

  • Imperial Uncle: Enjoying the translation + vibes, might continue

  • Last Night at the Telegraph Club: DNF because YA coming-of-age is not my flavor. I think if I was younger this might have been a more important book to me. And maybe it’s the Filo in me, but if the focus had been more on the beauty pageant I suspect I would not have dropped so soon. 😂

    1.

The tree across my window had its first full bloom of the year, the first along its street to turn gold. It shed its flowers two days later, of course, but it felt special, like it was just for me hehe. And hopefully it will bloom several more times before summer ends. :")

    2.
It was a long weekend for us and I had so many plans for it: catching up on sleep, catching up on Justice in the Dark, finishing I Am Setsuna, finishing all the episodes/movies I started and forgot to continue, journaling, etc... So far the only thing I've managed to do was game a little, GIF a lot, and finally sub ZXC's latest song, which confirmed for me that Resolve has been misbehaving as far as subtitles are concerned... I should probably check if there are any later versions but I'm afraid that any potential update might make the program stop working!?!?

    3.
I actually have been having a lot of complicated thoughts about Anglo cfandom since Justice in the Dark has me drawn back into various fandom spaces (mostly because I dump my GIFs on Tumblr and Twitter) after a long time of only being present on Youtube which was its own can of strangeness.

The drama itself has been... fine. I'm not the best judge because I watch raws (bc there's a provider that has added CN subs... And sometimes it's nice to read bullet comments haha) and can only understand so much... And I'm not particularly invested in the adaptation's plot... And I skip-watch all the parts that stress me out... It tracks fairly close to the novel, but I'm not sure how cohesive it is to an audience who is unfamiliar with the original—a lot was obviously cut (in the sense that scenes are conspicuously missing), and a lot of transitions feel janky, but the emotional storyline between Pei Su and Luo Weizhao has been kept intact. Their relationship is progressing at a different pace, which for me is interesting? For now, at least! Like it's sad that the gay got cut out, but I don't mind this version where Pei Su is still some level of antagonistic towards LWZ (not yet flirting), maybe because I'm just a casual Modu fan. XD

(A little nervous about seeing any SEA rep here since I remember mentions of it in the audio drama, but I'm not sure the universe has a concept of SEA, other than being filmed there.)

    Zhang Xincheng's acting seems to be well received across various audiences, but I'm weirdly... indifferent to it (the reception). I guess it's not that weird when I've seen (and have been following) most of his body of work and I tend to avoid the fandom/Weibo side of things; from my POV, watching his performance in a drama he filmed four years ago and was partially released two years ago feels more like a puzzle piece sliding into place... Like obviously I think he was cast well and put a lot of effort to build a character that is more interesting than usual... I just don't do fandom the same way anymore, I guess? My relationship with cdramas has changed, idk. Still enjoying! But from a quiet and more neutral distance. ^^;

    RECENTLY:

  • Finished Cheese in the Trap (manhwa) and Ya She (donghua).

  • Watched the "new" Justice in the Dark eps (eps# 9 and 10). "Watched" is a pretty generous way of saying "relied on my memory of the audio drama to understand what's going on". The "zero empathy" thing and DNA talk continue to befuddle me, though they mostly seem to be focused on the argument of nature VS nurture and what that means for Pei Su. It's quite interesting that they made LWZ's mentor's daughter a co-intern in this adaptation, it integrates her more into the plot and emotional themes since she was mostly offscreen in the original work. I'm trying to relearn how to GIF post GIFs on Tumblr and my fandom Bluesky but tbh my fandom energy has been on the decline and my ability to focus worse... it's already a miracle that I managed to watch two whole eps in a week.

  • Feeling a bit anxious in light of global news, because the repercussions of certain US policies might eventually ripple into my livelihood, but I'm trying not to think too much about it.

  • After months of being bald, the tree (I think it might be narra?) across the street has finally sprouted bright new leaves and has been practicing how to flower. :) I was actually really worried it was dying because it grows on concrete and seemed withered for so long and its "seasons" seemed out of sync with the rest of the trees along the street, but the vicious summer seems to have brought it back to life.

  • I'm still paper-journaling faithfully. Four months in and no blank pages, thanks to the manhwa I write about and the smatterings of cmedia that have me drawing new vocabulary. It's the only thing that feels tangible and real these days.

CW: fast-moving motion / glitch effects, and some flashing lights.

One last Cdrama Gotcha for Gaza video - this one's a treat for [personal profile] llonkrebboj who requested Murderer!Fei Du in Justice in the Dark (the ill-fated cdrama adaptation of Silent Reading/Mo Du), which to me is really just an excuse to make a compilation of ZXC's microexpressions and play around with Capcut's effects. One of the text transitions makes the text dreadfully pixellated, so note to self: never use that again lol. I wish I could have made a gifset of these clips, but *gestures at broken Photoshop*

For my own reference, the fonts I used were BOOWIE and a script font whose name I can't remember but starts with an A.

*wheezing* I thought that since I'd gone ahead and subbed (+ made lyric videos of), well, all of Zhang Xincheng's studio releases this year, it might be remiss to not complete the year with his Justice in the Dark song. Ironically it's his first song of the year, though it never got to have a proper release. :(

The theme songs in the Modu audiodrama were what baited me into Modu in the first place, so it's really nice to have more official songs! And solo ones this time. :)

Translation note: Some parts were hard for me to interpet with my dubious language abilities, but I hope my mistakes weren't too egregious...? I didn't know what 不愿再默自沧桑 meant so I tried to go with what I thought was a safe translation ("I'm not accepting the storms"), focusing on 沧桑 (changes and upheavals over time). For reference—IIRC the ~official~ subs had it down as "idling alone".
