I made so many JitD fanworks while watching the show and then moved on so fast that I forgot to post this here. 😂 Which I am doing now because I need to archive my notes. (Did this back in June, which feels like such a long time ago now.)

(At some point I'm going to have to compile all of my JitD vids/edits + Modu-related fanwork but also nah lol)

Justice in the Dark fanvid - 以沫 Yi Mo (or, as I call it on AO3, to be the foam on the waves, the breath in your lungs)

DESCRIPTION: In which Luo Weizhao follows Pei Su into the abyss. Clips from this video were taken from various episodes of the entire series; music from the Mo Du audio drama (Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du duet).

Also on tumblr

I worked so hard on this, mainly the audio editing which drove me bonkers because I was just winging everything and hoping it would come together. The resulting output was 5 different parts (from 3 versions of the song) Frankensteined together:
  • VERSE 1
  • pre-chorus from VERSE 2
  • backing track (instrumental-only no vocals) of the lyrics I couldn't be bothered to translate
(Life & Death version) of chorus with the audio adjusted two semi-tones up to match the pitch
  • LAST 2 LINES of original song

And then there were the dialogue clips (one advantage of making GIFs as you watch is that you mostly already know the timestamps AND you've already translated the dialogue, which made this part easy), which were an entire journey of volume adjustment— had to figure out the right balance so none of it was too loud or too soft. I played everything over and over again with and without earphones to make sure everything sounded "right" and I really am so pleased with how seamless the finished output is because I was honestly about to discard the whole WIP for how "wrong" it all sounded.

    Translation notes
Day and night" + "like yesterday"—To me, this feels like a haunting memory remembered as clearly as it was yesterday.

    - 你眼中飛蛾撲火: "In your eyes, self-destruction"—where "self-destruction" is expressed by the image "a moth darting into the flame". I wanted to keep the image but didn't know how to do it elegantly. :(

= This is a perfectly ambivalent line that can refer to both Fei Du (keeping his secrets from LWZ) and Luo Wenzhou (seeing the signs but choosing not to say anything). Ordinarily I read it as the former, but IDK, I felt like going the other way this week.

Who is softly reading"—I used to assume this meant the Reader in the radio station, but having just seen eps 28–29 I'm beginning to think it could be Fei Du's mom too.

    - 地獄之門大開著 眼前愈發渾濁: "The gates of hell are wide open / My vision gets cloudier/murkier": Probably because the conspiracies are going even deeper than imagined? I just went with "shrouded with darkness".

The one silently reading out names from the list of demons and is on their last breath is me"

    - 這人間萬家燈火 /值不值得 / 靠岸停泊: "The thousands of lights of this world / are they worth / docking for"—referring to all the houses that are lit up at night. Fei Du is looking at other homes, families, ordinary lives, and wondering if that world is worth it. This is one of my fav lines, which I think was represented very well in JitD and the warm lights in LWZ's home VS the cold emo villa; I took it from the second verse and moved it up.

No regrets / into the abyss together"

I've been neck-deep in a hundred different fandom projects that I have yet to cross-post but for the meantime, some bullet points:

  • Mangadex got hit with a big DMCA take-down, so that's a lot of fantranslations disappearing.

  • Justice in the Dark fandom had another round of tension at the end of May when Wowow released a statement about, idk, piracy and copyright infringement; in reaction to this, people started locking their accounts, deleting their posts, taking down translations(?)... I've also locked my Twitter account, more for fandom peace of mind than the fear of WWW seeing my GIFs/edits and cancelling the show lol. I've been having a lot of feelings about fandom, fandom norms, and Anglo cfandom experiences that I want to process but I'm too distracted to write about them. Anyway I'm pretty excited for the show to be fully released so the air feels more clear.

Jaws/Baishajaws (the band who does Link Click's theme songs) disbanded. I've only skimmed internet reactions but it seems like a messy situation involving copyright(?), pay, and allegedly the front man being a dick.

  • The Mo Du / Silent Reading audio drama hit a new streaming milestone, so they recorded a message thanking the listeners and wishing us the best. (I literally screamed when I got the update notification lol.)

  • A screenrecording of my subtitling process because I was showing someone how to sub on Resolve... Now I'm wondering if other apps (eg. Aegisub) are better, after all. (I use Resolve bc I also edit videos and I just supplement with other software, depending on my needs.)

I keep finding out again and again that people react to my designs the most when I draw earnestly. I recommend the same to you, the world is a lot more interesting with your vision in it. If you’re scared people won’t like it just remember that you should be your biggest fan and that you’ll be glad you put your heart on paper. An honest design will last you a lot longer than a popular one. It’ll make you stand out more, too.

Challenge #7: Make a list of fannish and/or creative resources.

Cfandom people are always looking for Chinese learning resources, so here is a list (with other links thrown in):

Challenge #8 Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying)
Not exactly fannish, but I'm trying to maintain a journal—and trying to keep reading cnovels so I have content to put on my journal (vocabulary lists). XD I meant to finish My Five Elements Lack You before LNY but I've been to preoccupied to sit down and read, oops.

And someone did an animatic of a Modu audiodrama skit (parody of a viral Korean video/meme) I subtitled/translated, though as usual, I can't look at my old stuff without critiquing them and wanting to claw out my face.

Challenge #9: Rec Us Your Newest Thing.
Not really a "thing", but, well, my latest dog obsession is Manyu and only Manyu!!! I now understand solo/celeb stans because I felt a wave of crushing disappointment when her owner posted a photo of her little brother... Like, cute doggo, but that's not my baby :( :( :( I hope she's genuinely being treated well by her owners because she seems like such a sweet baby and I love her little face sooooo much.

I also started Fire Emblem: Three Houses last week + am trying to do Yoga with Adriene's January 30-day challenge without following her timeline, ie. just doing a video whenever I feel like it. I don't usually vibe with her videos but this series actually looks beneficial for my back, with different core focuses and an average video length of 18-20 minutes. We'll see if I can make it to the end! (I'm at Day 6 lol)

    Challenge #10: Five Things
Five recent reads/watches (or attempts to):

  • Dungeon Meshi anime: fantasy anime about experiencing the cycle of life by cooking in the dungeon. Updates every Thursday, and it was a nice weekly unwinding ritual for 2 weeks, until I fell into the FE3H pit. I didn't make it very far into the manga, so I'm excited to see the rest of the story in the anime! IMO ep1 flew by too fast for the food and comedy scenes to be truly done justice, but ep2 was a bit smoother. I expect it to find its groove as it goes—even the manga took a couple of volumes to pick up momentum.

  • Frieren: another fantasy anime, one about mortality, outliving the people you love, and carrying the parts they left behind on your journey. I only got to see maybe 1.5 eps and the grief and pre-grief hit me pretty hard so I'm not super sure this is for me. It's very wholesome and soothing otherwise! The basic premise is life after saving the world.

  • I Told Sunset About You: 5-episode Thai BL drama, one that I remember a non-fandom friend recommending a few years back, long before the sequel existed. I think I only made it through half an ep because I couldn't multitask to it? XD But production values are very promising, and characters seem to be Thai Chinese, which is interesting to me!

Chang'an (2023): Just watched this weekend, and will try to write about it at some point lol. tl;dr - This is a 3/5 movie for me.

  • The 2023 Hugo nomination statistics have finally been released – and we have questions: stats and discussion roundup.

*wheezing* I thought that since I'd gone ahead and subbed (+ made lyric videos of), well, all of Zhang Xincheng's studio releases this year, it might be remiss to not complete the year with his Justice in the Dark song. Ironically it's his first song of the year, though it never got to have a proper release. :(

The theme songs in the Modu audiodrama were what baited me into Modu in the first place, so it's really nice to have more official songs! And solo ones this time. :)

    English soft subs:

    Chinese + English hardsubs:

Translation note: Some parts were hard for me to interpet with my dubious language abilities, but I hope my mistakes weren't too egregious...? I didn't know what 不愿再默自沧桑 meant so I tried to go with what I thought was a safe translation ("I'm not accepting the storms"), focusing on 沧桑 (changes and upheavals over time). For reference—IIRC the ~official~ subs had it down as "idling alone".

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive BakingA Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

3.5 - I liked the first half better than the second half where the plot escalates but everything still feels kinda simplistic and the baking becomes less defensive. :P But it's still a fun, charming book, one I would recommend IRL (for example, to my relative's teenage daughter who's not enjoying her father's fantasy novel recommendations). I was invested in the characters and their familiars.

    Nirvana in Fire (novel)
A groupread that started May 2022, lol. My not-so-live livetweet thread is here.

Overall, I think I prefer the drama over the novel for how it streamlined the novel, restructured the storytelling and added new dimensions, and for how well it brought the novel's characters to life, but the novel ending feels more right to me in terms of how it ends for Lin Shu. I liked how much more quiet the final showdown was, how the shadow of (highlight for spoilers) Tainainai's death continues to loom over Lin Shu, and for how Lin Shu smiles at the end:
    (novel-ending spoiler) 放眼十万男儿,奔腾如虎,环顾爱将挚友,倾心相持。当年梅岭寒雪中所失去的那个世界,似乎又隐隐回到了面前。烟尘滚滚中,梅长苏地唇边露出了一抹飞扬明亮地笑容,不再回眸帝京,而是拨转马头,催动已是四蹄如飞的坐骑,毅然决然地奔向了他所选择地未来,也是他所选择的结局。

I do think that the drama lost some of Liyang's backstory, and Yujin's more obvious deftness, but their opaqueness in the drama made them interesting, still. However, I'm sad that we never got to see Meng Zhi hug MCS. >:(

(Modu cdrama)

This has been quite the rollercoaster because I was trying to ignore the rumor about Modu cdrama being cleared to air and about to drop, which turned out to be true. Even more bizarre, the show dropped 8 episodes only a few hours after it was confirmed to have gotten its airing license!?!? And then it just stopped updating after that, LOL.

There's also been just a lot of friction about the cdrama on Twitter, and from what I could see, a lot of it was huge conversations about what people assumed of the cdrama adaptation, and not the actual cdrama adaptation. Now that it's been two weeks and all 8 eps have human-translated English subs, maybe it's calmed down a bit and people are assessing the actual show now!

Anyway my first impressions are that the cdrama does stick pretty close to the book! But also it feels to me that they had to cut out scenes or add new ones for the first case, and fill up the airtime, so the procedural aspects for the first 5 eps are really, really bad (especially episode 5). The character relationships and banter were preserved (these parts are still so fun and cute!), though, apart from the expected erasure of Luo Wenzhou as an openly gay man. The quality gap between eps 1-5 to eps 6-8 is quite huge.

I'm presently using the break to catch up on the audiodrama's final season and revisit the plot with fresh eyes. ♥

    Misc things

    Chorus:
    How many meetings[1]
turn out to be brief encounters in the end?
But you and I have sailed a thousand voyages together
Live or die, we are never letting go[2]

    LWZ:
    I'll swim the distance[3]
and build a harbor of stars
The glimmering lights will show you the way
    Flickering in your eyes
    and ferrying you home.

    FD:
Thousands of lights are blazing bright
    This life[4] is worth it

    DIALOGUE:
    LWZ:
    Sorry... I was too late...

    FD:
It's over... All the demons have been purged. I'm the last one left. Can you take me to your home and lock me up?

    Footnotes:
  • 1萍水相逢: "meeting, like duckweeds drifting in the water", an idiom for chance encounters. The entire line means "There are so many meetings, but in the end they're all just brief encounters".

Also there's this line from S3 E11 (I'm translating this badly, I've forgotten the context):
    這些朋友,萍水相逢,聚散隨心,即便友誼地久天長,人卻還是來了又走,終究還是外人... 呵,我也不敢太自作多情地把自己當”內人”,有時候覺得自己就像一隻”隔岸觀火”的飛蛾,才剛剛得以一窺費渡這燈罩上旋轉的圖景,剛剛伸出觸順,打算去碰一碰那色澤奇的光....... 那盞流光溢彩的玻璃燈就這麼碎在了我的面前。
Friendships made from chance encounters, meeting then parting at a whim... Though old acquaintances are never forgotten, people still come and go as they please, ultimately remaining "outsiders". Ah, but I don't dare go as far as to proclaim myself as an "insider" to Fei Du. Sometimes I feel like a moth watching the flame across the river. Fei Du is the lamp I’ve just begun to get close enough to circle, to reach towards... wanting to touch that strange and colorful light, only for the glass around it to shatter in front of me.[return]

  • 2生死相擁: intertwined; "embracing each other in life and death" [return]

  • 3遠空: "distant space" [return]

  • 4In the 2nd pre-chorus of the first ED, Fei Du passes by the dazzling lights and wonders if they're worth docking his ship for. [return]

  • Current consumption queue:
Mo Du (Silent Reading) audiodrama: s4 e7
  • Winter Begonia: halfway through ep 17
  • Dear Missy: ep 11 (watchalong; 3 eps every Sunday)

I've been busy and tired (aren't we all), so it's really just the Dear Missy watch parties I'm keeping up with. I'm also still planning to make a Qihun fanvid + fancomic recs post... eventually. XD
