I thought this was a good one to do, considering how fragmented my internet identity is. XD

I'm A, a walking identity crisis who uses a different handle on pretty much every platform! The ones I identify with the most are [tumblr.com profile] decrescendo and [archiveofourown.org profile] grassjelly.

I'm currently fandom-less, but my fandoms are typically Asian media (JRPGs, animanga, and various cdrama), though I've been in book fandom in the past (Les Miserables, Discworld).

My primary medium is graphics, though I've recently shifted to fanvids.

I kind of want to do a image dump of my fanart over the years but I will try to restrain myself!!!! The ones I feel are most representative of my heart are from what I think of as my days of youth: my various Discworld fanwork (2011–2015) and Nirvana in Fire X Persona 5 tarot deck (2018) [process post here], and also this one typographic animation I did for Guardian (2018)...

I also eventually learned to GIF. :)

NiF Mini Exchange 2023 just went live and here are my favorites (mostly gen):

Building Standards
Meng Zhi's adventures in house hunting.
A very fun missing episode about Meng Zhi trying to find a house for MCS. Cute, funny, slice-of-life.

Traced Everywhere in Thought
Mu Nihuang and Lin Chen have tea, discuss logistics, and determinedly do not wake Mei Changsu, who needs more sleep than he gets.
Excellent Nihuang PoV of an interesting interaction! I adore her intelligence, her passing thoughts and observations, her determination and her jiejie-ness.

Cozening
If Qin Banruo was the kind of woman given to self-deception, she would say that the affair was the best way to prevent Lanjin from interfering with her plans for Prince Yu. But Qin Banruo can be nothing but ruthless with others, so she is nothing but ruthless with herself.
Pairing: Banruo/Prince Yu's wife. A sharp reflection of Banruo through a rareship lens.

Honorable mentions: bamboos bend and break, a prequel fic about the older gen trio (Lin Xie, Yan Que, Xiao Xuan) centered around Consort Chen, and bitter sorrow shared, a space AU about Lin Chen finding and treating Lin Shu in the aftermath of the Chiyan tragedy.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive BakingA Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

3.5 - I liked the first half better than the second half where the plot escalates but everything still feels kinda simplistic and the baking becomes less defensive. :P But it's still a fun, charming book, one I would recommend IRL (for example, to my relative's teenage daughter who's not enjoying her father's fantasy novel recommendations). I was invested in the characters and their familiars.

Nirvana in Fire (novel)
A groupread that started May 2022, lol. My not-so-live livetweet thread is here.

Overall, I think I prefer the drama over the novel for how it streamlined the novel, restructured the storytelling and added new dimensions, and for how well it brought the novel's characters to life, but the novel ending feels more right to me in terms of how it ends for Lin Shu. I liked how much more quiet the final showdown was, how the shadow of (highlight for spoilers) Tainainai's death continues to loom over Lin Shu, and for how Lin Shu smiles at the end:
(novel-ending spoiler) 放眼十万男儿,奔腾如虎,环顾爱将挚友,倾心相持。当年梅岭寒雪中所失去的那个世界,似乎又隐隐回到了面前。烟尘滚滚中,梅长苏地唇边露出了一抹飞扬明亮地笑容,不再回眸帝京,而是拨转马头,催动已是四蹄如飞的坐骑,毅然决然地奔向了他所选择地未来,也是他所选择的结局。

I do think that the drama lost some of Liyang's backstory, and Yujin's more obvious deftness, but their opaqueness in the drama made them interesting, still. However, I'm sad that we never got to see Meng Zhi hug MCS. >:(

光渊 (Modu cdrama)

This has been quite the rollercoaster because I was trying to ignore the rumor about Modu cdrama being cleared to air and about to drop, which turned out to be true. Even more bizarre, the show dropped 8 episodes only a few hours after it was confirmed to have gotten its airing license!?!? And then it just stopped updating after that, LOL.

There's also been just a lot of friction about the cdrama on Twitter, and from what I could see, a lot of it was huge conversations about what people assumed of the cdrama adaptation, and not the actual cdrama adaptation. Now that it's been two weeks and all 8 eps have human-translated English subs, maybe it's calmed down a bit and people are assessing the actual show now!

Anyway my first impressions are that the cdrama does stick pretty close to the book! But also it feels to me that they had to cut out scenes or add new ones for the first case, and fill up the airtime, so the procedural aspects for the first 5 eps are really, really bad (especially episode 5). The character relationships and banter were preserved (these parts are still so fun and cute!), though, apart from the expected erasure of Luo Wenzhou as an openly gay man. The quality gap between eps 1-5 to eps 6-8 is quite huge.

I'm presently using the break to catch up on the audiodrama's final season and revisit the plot with fresh eyes. ♥

Misc things

This is mostly a reminder for me, but:
  • Leonor Will Never Die (Filipino movie): coming to Netflix on March 17
  • Mula sa Buwan (Filipino musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac): streaming online for a limited time on March 20+.

    Books

Hai Yan, "Nirvana in Fire" (vol.1)
Very slow start, mostly exposition. Highlights: MCS's theatrical moments, Xie Yu's intro, Yujin's scenes. This volume starts with the announcement of the tournament for Nihuang's hand in marriage, and by the end of the volume the tournament hasn't ended...

Read this volume in Chinese, and have switched to English for vol2 because I've been, ahem, distracted.

Keigo Higashino, "The Murder in Kairoutei"
Read the Chinese translation. Thoughts about both the novel and the issues with translating it to Chinese here.

    TV

    Spy X Family
Got artbaited into starting the anime and was sorely let down. IMO the heteronormativity comes off a lot worse when the setup is found family and the pacing is very slice-of-life. I'm especially dissatisfied with the way Yor is written because it doesn't feel like she has any specific thoughts or emotions? She's more preoccupied with belonging, and not in an interesting way.

The manga pacing is a lot more enjoyable and has some fun shenanigans (I loved the over-the-top tennis arc haha) but the sexism gets worse, unfortunately. Recent chapters have more Yor focus, but she still feels so empty and un-written as a character, and out-of-place among the trio because she has no real relationship or thoughts about either of them. And it's not that I'm not familiar with shounen-typical sexism (no matter how "competent" the FL is, the ML is always better), it's just that I feel it betrays its premise.

I might finish the anime season because it's animated really well and I do think it's pretty fun, but I'm going to be salty about it. XD

    The Murder in Kairoutei (cdrama)
A Keigo Higashino adaptation that was filmed in 2020 and mysteriously put on hold for 2 years.

I think the first 4 eps are watchable if you like romance, but the show is just... bad. Literally NONE of the storylines OR characters are compelling. On the whole, it was also just so badly edited it's almost a feat. I think its biggest crime is setting up the FL, Jiang Yuanxing (played by Deng Jiajia), to be a hypercompetent corporate woman and then making her be EXTREMELY INCOMPETENT AND UNPROFESSIONAL throughout the show. FROM EPISODE 1.

I personally believe that some of it was... calculated incompetence? And I do wonder if they erased her storyline during the editing process, because motivations were clearly hinted at, just not acted on.

They also stacked all the major novel storylines on the ML's side (Cheng Cheng, played by Zhang Xincheng--we do not question his name), which is super annoying when they did the FL so dirty.

My one silver lining for this is that I'm really enjoying the extra content! I have a thread here. Deng Jiajia and Zhang Xincheng are so cute together? They both bring such good energies to the interviews, with a surprising amount of intimacy and comfiness with each other. DJJ is particularly charming and personable and her reactions are so cute.

  • PV for the Yoruneko anime!!!: I'm a huge fan of [twitter.com profile] kyuryuZ's comics about hanging out with their cat at night, and I'm SO excited and delighted to see them animated.
  • halfcactus: an icon of a manga shiba inu (Default)

I feel like I should have stopped after the first chorus and maybe not animated the lyrics too much but I really want to play with Da Vinci Resolve's type tools? I haven't figured out how to merge text layers or how fusion compositions work. ;___; I also set an imaginary deadline of having to finish before the weekend because I got too caught up working on this that I couldn't get myself to do anything else at night or listen to my friend's new album.

    Notes:
  • Started Wednesday, finished Sunday. My nights have been free since I quit my part-time job, so I didn't have to lose sleep over this. XD
  • I'm mildly annoyed because this wasn't the thing I wanted to work on, but the song came out of shuffle and I had a flashback to the gifset I made based on it in 2018.
  • 1 fanvid ago I couldn't even figure out how to get the dropshadow to appear. Now I have mastered it. XD
  • Just as I started this, my brain was like "but WHAT IF FFXV VERSION". I did end up mentally outlining what an FFXV version would look like before I realized that doing a vid to the same song I've had on repeat would drive me crazy actually!
  • I have discovered!!! The coloring panel!!! I'm not much of a coloring person but it's useful to be able to brighten up dark scenes.
  • I feel like I discovered a lot of other things but I'm presently too sick of thinking about this hahaha.

For [community profile] nirvanainfirefest Challenge #3: DVD Commentary, I'm gonna try to walk through the process of creating the multimedia NiF x Persona 5 fusion that I created for [archiveofourown.org profile] swanfrost for NiF Exchange 2018 [best viewed on carrd]. I've always wanted to document it because it went through so many phases, I just never knew how to begin.

For the prompt: ensemble cast | persona 5 au, feel free to follow the plot of p5 or to use the setting/lore as inspiration! notes: bonus points for character study-esque writing and using the mcs/linshu naming conventions cleverly; happy ending please

At the time I was creating it, I was also doing a lot of tedious work at night, and I was working on NiF Exchange in bits and pieces to give myself a break. I mostly remember the backaches and basically had to avoid being on the computer on my downtime for like 2 years. :)) I have an office chair now, though, and life has been better (and more productive) because of it. Can't believe I waited til 2021 to get one. /o\

tl;dr - summary of the process:
  • Coming up with the concept (in which I decided I wanted to do a fanvid/lyric vid)
  • Outlining what I wanted to include in the vid
  • Initial studies and visual development
  • Learning to vid and do basic motion effects on AE ajs;afjda;fja;
  • Tracing selected characters into lines and vector shapes on AI (I just needed 5, enough for the Phantom Thieves deck)
  • Designing the cards on PS (again, I only needed 5 of each design)
  • Putting the illustrated and animated elements in the vid
  • Realizing I could do the rest of the tarot deck, actually???
  • Presentation: gifs, carrd
