The vocab notes have been paying off as I go further in the show. \o/ But I've been too busy just trying to catch up with the episodes to keep at it. ^^;
Media
The best parts were the family storyline—the FL struggles with the pressure of being the eldest daughter; when she changes and asserts her feelings, her family changes with her. I loved watching Inho being folded into that bubble. And I really liked that one of the story arcs was about a gay couple going through the roughest patch of their relationship because of financial stress.
Fanworks roundup
My submission for Blind Go—an ensemble-cast video about the various criss-crossing paths that the characters have chosen to walk, featuring a hug compilation at the end. :) Tap the CC button for English subtitles.
I don't really have a lot of feelings about this, but I relistened to the full song recently and now I appreciate my past self's audio choices? I'd spliced together all the chorus variations from different sections of the song, so the chorus in the video comes off as overly long but I think it kiiiiinda works when it ends on the big, sweeping instrumental break.
The song is 夜空中最亮的星 (Brightest Star in the Night Sky) by Escape Plan. As I was looking for cover versions I could possibly use I ran into Yisa Yu's performance which was absolutely ethereal and went straight into my personal playlists... Wish there was a full version!
I still ended up using with the original studio version by Escape Plan because the lyrics were more complete and the vibes more appropriate. ^^;
I was pretty satisfied with the lyric translation at the time I wrote it, for the simple reason that at that it looked like it was done by a human person. It's a fairly straightforward song but sometimes you have to hang on to the little things.
Translation "draft":

I never refer to these when I'm actually subbing btw (I prefer to translate as I'm watching my own vid), it's just a good way to organize my thoughts and consider how else I can edit my vid.
( CN lyrics + text translation below )
A fanvid about Pei Su's grief about his mom, with clips sourced from eps 1-15 of Justice in the Dark and a lot of emphasis on the lyrics. It's set to the Taiwanese song Mercy Mercy, Green Tara of Thousand Flowers by Collage, which I've been obsessed with since I first heard it. (Here's a journal page I did on the lyrics last year!)
AO3 / Twitter
~Process~ video of the first 20 seconds (concept VS final)... Looking at it now I'm realizing that the "burning" transition in the draft version was better but oh well!!! I'm kind of happy with how the type turned out because it was so ugly at first that I got determined to finish this vid just to overwrite the memory of ugliness that kept playing in my mind lol. I've sorted out Resolve's subtitle issues btw! I just have to right-click the Timeline and set the timecode.
The lyric translation was adapted from the band’s own English translation; most of my changes were in the service of making them more self-explanatory (since there's a lot going on onscreen) and recontextualizing them for the characters/video clips.
And in the process of handling the text I not only felt closer to it, I also discovered that in Taiwanese Hokkien
My mind was so blown by this discovery before it hit me one day later that this is probably also true in my dialect (in the sense that I have heard ko as a counter word for month, ie. chih-ko geh for "one month"), I'm just too illiterate to understand what's happening lololol.
Anyway I documented everything! The original Taiwanese lyrics, the band's translation, my edits (not all of them justifiable).( all under the cut )

个 is a traditional character, and means the same as in simplified Mandarin; apparently Taiwanese, which uses traditional script, recognizes 个 and 個 as separate words, with 个 (pronounced eh) being the general counter word, and 個 (pronounced ke) being a counter for months. My mind was so blown by this discovery before it hit me one day later that this is probably also true in my dialect (in the sense that I have heard ko as a counter word for month, ie. chih-ko geh for "one month"), I'm just too illiterate to understand what's happening lololol.

[fanvid] xxxHolic - Wonderland
Apr. 13th, 2025 12:32 amSaw the 2022 xxxHolic movie today—it wasn't a very good movie (in the sense that it needed another 30-60 mins purely just as an intro to Watanuki and his relationships) but it went SO HARD with the aesthetic I actually forgot about JitD for the rest of the day. It was my first time vidding on this computer and I guess it went well until I was exporting the subtitle track (which I ended up having to fix on Youtube's subtitles editor). Not sure if I messed something up or the version of Resolve I have is just wonky...
Also documented the "process". Top = before coloring, bottom = final output:
The color adjustments were mostly to brighten up the clips, though I might have overdone the brightness and the color correction lololol. Anyway my favorite cuts in this vid were Yuuko's eyes opening in increments at 0:35 and Watanuki stepping on the ledge at the line "up to the top". :')

I tried to stick to "angst with happy ending" but couldn't figure out how to end it, so..........
AO3 / Tumblr
Fun facts:
1) I actually started out fiddling with an edit set to Don't Think Twice (Kingdom Hearts 3 OST) but it wasn't working and the vibes were all wrong, so I scrapped everything and started all over. ;___; Finished a lot faster the second time round though! Maybe because it's the weekend. XD
2) The first time I posted this to Youtube, I misspelled my recipient's name (I always add these to the end of my videos) and had to delete, edit, and reupload. ;__;
Anyway, I'm finally done with my Cdrama Gotcha for Gaza assignments! I should probably... make a proper roundup post because it was kind of. A lot. And I definitely need to listen to more music and replenish my stock of fanviddable songs...

This was such a great song suggestion from the requester herself! I got all the feels reading the lyrics and found it perfect for a number of Hikaru no Go characters. ;__; I tried to squeeze in as many shippy moments as I could (as requested) but the gen / Go Club feelings won out haha. I love them!!! So much!!!
There were a couple of lines in the lyrics I wasn't sure I understood, so I'm afraid I might have mistranslated them. Thankfully my audience of one doesn't need subs???

One last request left, with a week (and a whole weekend) to spare, which means I might end up dropping the ball on it. I feel bad for the requester already ajsksdfpa;sj;

For
I earmarked this song (I of the Storm by Of Monsters and Men) as a MCS song a while back, so while it was a good to have the opportunity to make a vid out of it, I wish I had a lot more time to refine it! I kind of botched the audio edit and I'm not very happy with the typesetting, but I wanted this out of the way before the end of the weekend because I still have two more prompts to fill. Tbh I originally intended to just do the first verse, but apparently I love the song too much and all of the lyrics are all too relevant, and I haven't even gotten tired of it the way I have with all the other songs I've vidded.
Note to self: export text-less version before deleting process file!!!

Re: Cdrama G4G - My main assignment was the second one (Hikaru no Go - go-themed wedding), everything else was a pinch hit with self-imposed deadlines and I think it kind of shows. ^^;
And I think I might have translated/scanslated the final main chapter of the I Ship My Rival X Me manhua for a couple of friends at some point? But it's not work I'm proud of so I'm happy to just let it be buried in the chat.
I've also managed to continue reading at least 2 chapters of She Belongs to Me a week which I'm happy with. But no time for journaling. :( :( :(

My brain right now is in "This Is the Worst Thing I've Ever Created" mode in the sense that I like the individual parts but can't reconcile them into forming a cohesive concept. I guess it's acceptable as a fundraiser gift I banged out in a weekend (I was hoping to be done with my assignments before ZXC's drama dropped—though realistically I don't have the energy or the attention span to watch anything these days). I think it's just that the first time I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve, and it shows. Also I was too lazy to go back and redo the color grading in the first scenes and didn't realize how much it'd bother me.
PS. For future!me who will no doubt try to remember what we did - the font I used was dear ivy.
As for the smoke overlay, I downloaded a (free to use without attribution) video clip of smoke to turn this

The idea is for Shi Guang and Yu Liang's wedding to be a Go tournament, but I lost track of the plot around 30 seconds in oops haha
In other news, P-pop girl group BINI, who just released a banger summer minialbum, appeared in Mango TV's Show It All today...It's pretty cool to see a Chinese translation of their lyrics even though some of it is wrong (they should have retranslated from the official English translation, IMO) + the Tagalog lyric captions are a mess lol.

Reuploads of old works for friends + backup purposes—some of my videos on Vimeo that have music from mainland China are getting contentID'd (and thus blocked when I don't replace/mute the music), it's weird. The ones with music from Hong Kong/Taiwan artists (Teresa Teng, Mayday, G.E.M.) seem safe so far but one can't get too complacent. These are all old works from 2020 and early 2021, when I was still new to vidding and subtitling . Actually all subtitled videos (minus the ISMM trailer, which required some heavier editing work) on this post were done on my phone and with some regret because I've begun to detest typing on my phone (to the point that I have installed my mobile messaging apps on my computer so I can reply to messages there)... At the same time I hate opening up DaVinci Resolve on desktop so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*wheezing* I thought that since I'd gone ahead and subbed (+ made lyric videos of), well, all of Zhang Xincheng's studio releases this year, it might be remiss to not complete the year with his Justice in the Dark song. Ironically it's his first song of the year, though it never got to have a proper release. :(

Movie: 這麼多年 All These Years
May. 21st, 2023 10:00 pmThis is an odd mixture of romance and family drama that didn't quite fit well together. She is a poor girl from a small town who values education as her ticket out of her toxic household, while he is a popular rich boy who's always out cutting classes and causing trouble. They fall in and out of friendship (though Li Ran pretty much falls straight into love XD), ultimately losing contact when she moves to a different country, only reuniting when she flies back for a family emergency. The movie alternates between present and past.
It felt like they shot so many scenes (and they were shot very well too!) from the novel but couldn't figure out how to put them all together into a cohesive story—to the point that it didn't really feel like the story had any themes at all. Subplots that I thought would be called back to or addressed later on were simply dropped. The characters didn't really get a chance to be characters or have personalities, they were just ingredients for conflict—conflicts that weren't actually resolved, just pushed out of the way.
Pacing and flow were really weird. There was poor judgement in what parts to include and how much of them was needed; some scenes felt either completely extraneous or overly long, while the ones that I felt were important only lasted five seconds, or were omitted altogether, and nothing really made emotional sense to me. It's such a shame because there were some really cinematic moments that ended up feeling wholly unearned. Similarly, the "memorable" lines also ended up falling flat because they simply didn't get the space to gather weight.
It's so weird because I spent two hours following Chen Jianxia's journey from insecure teenager to assertive adult, and at the end of everything I still had no idea who she was. But I think what this movie lacks the most is joy, something that Chen Jianxia was clearly capable of but was shunted off as a background detail (apparently she's good friends with Zhang Ruonan's character at the end, but all of this happens offscreen, while significant time is spent on multiple bullying scenes with varying levels of plot relevance). I think if the happy moments had been given a chance to be in the foreground, the resolutions would have felt meaningful enough to give me some satisfaction.
On a more positive note, the songs were nice, the cinematography was actually pretty great, and my favorite part was the middle bit where Chen Jianxia realizes that she's more capable than she thought and learns to assert herself.
*
That said, here is the ~*lyric video*~ I made of ZXC's song, whose title (Shattered Time) I now think is fitting given the movie's very fragmentary and jagged pacing. XD
Other MVs for this movie (note that I feel that the ZXC song is the weakest among these, since it's more of a character song):
晚星 / Evening Star:
空空的/ Empty-Handed (my personal favorite; it's the most thematic one):

Feb. 15th, 2023 07:25 pmOkay, this has been a week for trailers that are relevant to my interests. (All subbed by me because this is my life now...)
Quick Youtube links:
Glass Vision Short: "微暗之火/Gone with the Wind" (Tong Yao, Zhang Xincheng)
Trailer: "这么多年/All These Years" (Sun Qian, Zhang Xincheng): please do not perceive my embarrassing mistranslation lol
Trailer#2: 这么多年/All These Years
Trailer: "回廊亭/Revival" (The Murder in Kairoutei 2023 | Ren Suxi, Liu Mintao)
Fanvid: The Longest Movie (The Day of Becoming You)
Novel problems: very problematic age gap situation (I can't remember the details; I personally haven't read the novel).
Author problems: appears to be a known plagiarist, most memorably for the novel that the movie Better Days was based on.
This teaser itself is very bland——I don't know how much of that is because the show hasn't been finalized yet, but eitherway the styling is pure aesthetic and devoid of any personality. I do find it fascinating how well-known and influential Rabindranath Tagore is in China? Something I realized after watching a bunch of cdramas and following ZXC.
(PS. The (superior) Vogue short that
dramateaque mentioned can be viewed here. I subbed that too. 😂)
This is a movie based on the fourth Zhenhua novel by Ba Yue Chang An. Previous Zhenhua adaptations include Unrequited Love (Zhao Shunran, Zhu Yanmanzi), With You (Liu Haoran, Tan Songyun), and My Huckleberry Friends (Li Landi, Zhang Xincheng).
So Many Years (also known as All These Years) is about loving each other through years of regrets and separations. Hopefully the high school shenanigans will be as fun and energetic as the ones I've seen in the drama adaptations! Zhang Xincheng's high school look here brings me such great delight:

My feelings for Zhang Xincheng are obvious, but I'm actually also a huge fan of Sun Qian's performance in Remembrance of Things Past where she struck a good balance of immature but charming. She was so cute!!! And she made me cry!!!!
I can't embed it because it's a short so I'll just link it lol.

This movie was originally set to be released March last year (2022), suddenly went totally silent, and came back today to announce that it's coming out on March 2023, finally. <3 I'm definitely still very intrigued, though concerned about the changes that might have been made during the one-year silence (the 2022 cdrama also went through a lot of obvious edits and made no sense).
(Also on Bilibili, but I expect it to get taken down.)

Glass Vision’s short didn’t really have a clear message. What does it wanna say? That things can change over 5 years? That relationships are hard?

Vogue’s short at least offered a look into the characters & implied age gap issues. (But hey, ZXC nails the ‘man in love’ as usual.) pic.twitter.com/ncj1Ob2BQq

这么多年/So Many Years full trailer (Sun Qian, Zhang Xincheng)
T/N: In 00:37 of my fansubs, “What if goodbye” should be “What if we meet again” LMFAOThis is a movie based on the fourth Zhenhua novel by Ba Yue Chang An.

这么多年/So Many Years Trailer #2 (Sun Qian, Zhang Xincheng)
This teaser takes you through the movie's major plot points, synopsis-style. The BGM (Eason Chan's Ten Years) is both very fitting—the person who cut the video knew exactly what they were doing—and also A Choice.I can't embed it because it's a short so I'll just link it lol.

"回廊亭/Revival" (The Murder in Kairoutei 2023 | Ren Suxi, Liu Mintao)
An upcoming movie adaptation of Keigo Higashino's The Murder in Kairoutei starring Ren Suxi and Liu Mintao!!! The promotional materials emphasize that this is a two-woman story, with absolutely no word about the boyfriend.
"The Longest Movie" (The Day of Becoming You fanvid)
Basically just the cinema scene in The Day of Becoming You ep25 with Jay Chou's The Longest Movie as the BGM hehe. I needed this edit to exist because THE SONG IS SO PERFECT FOR THIS SCENE, and now it exists. XD(Also on Bilibili, but I expect it to get taken down.)

Content Notes: some flashing lights in the clubbing clips, some sexual content, a fair amount of emotional making out
POV: You are Cheng Cheng and you want Jiang Yuanxing to step on you.
I still don't recommend this show, but the leads have such good chemistry and really stellar looks (and have you seen Deng Jiajia smile????).
Creation notes:
- Realized afterwards that the lyric should be "Fill up the engine, we can drive real far", but that entire line is so bad (fill up the engine???) I don't want to dignify it with corrections, lol.
- The audio cuts aren't as on-beat as they could be, which annoys me deeply, but that's on me for always telling myself that I'll "fix it later" and then being too lazy to actually fix it...
- Very happy with the type, considering how slapdash the process was on my end! The show does naturally lend itself to fun color palettes. :) I want to say that the aesthetic was inspired by the movie Drive, but I just really enjoy pink/magenta text (especially since ZXC loves pink) haha.
I was getting tired of the chaos of Twitter, so I started a Youtube account for... Zhang Xincheng things. As much as I really miss working on my desktop and having more control over typography and design, this has been a really fun exercise of learning how to do new things and learning a bit about how Youtube works (I always thought the end cards/links were automatically generated, but turns out they are manually activated!). And anyway, I find screenrecording on mobile/tablet so much easier than on desktop.
And while I don't expect anyone, even my fellow enthusiasts in the Anglosphere, to watch all 11 minutes of this cut of his livestream that I put together from my 999 Twitter posts about it, PLEASE APPRECIATE MY CUTE 8-SECOND INTRO (that I trimmed from an edit that I did earlier this week haha).
(The reason I'm moving to Youtube is because Vimeo has a space limit, and I think it's best to keep my Vimeo as my more "artistic" and "creative" space.)
And if anyone's wondering, the apps I use are primarily InShot for trimming and editing and yeeting to Twitter, and Video Captions for captioning. For that compilation vid, I used Lumafusion which I don't actually recommend because it's paid and expensive (one-time fee, no trial) and still doesn't support subtitle tracks, and not fun, and definitely not for people who have no video-editing experience (it's more similar to desktop software, but with fewer features, though specially designed for mobile/tablet). It is excellent for exporting and better for longer videos, since InShot has so limited compression options (it's designed for social media use), you end up with giant files which I almost immediately delete from my phone/tablet.
Honestly I was going to write an entire post about app pros and cons because I have 8934853489 opinions and very specific needs but I GOT DISTRACTED.

In other news, I got a new watch, a Garmin Lily:

I originally bought it for the look and size (it's a watch that was especially designed for small wrists and fashionability) with a little bit of wanting to learn more about myself, but I actually... like it a lot?!? In the grand spectrum of fitness watches, this is probably more on the side of casual use, but I've honestly always liked tracking my exercise (with a very lax definition of exercise; mostly I just stretch my back for 10-15 mins) because it makes me feel like I'm doing something with my life. It's also summer and I tend to be more physically active in the summer with the logic of "since I'm already sweaty and suffering, I might as well get sweatier and suffer some more". I've really enjoyed the ease with which I can just doubletap the watchface to let my watch know that I'm engaging in a physical activity, and doubletap to tell it that the activity has stopped, and then I can see how hard my heart has been working during that timeframe (evidently not as hard as I always think haha).
The annoying thing about it is that the Garmin Connect app doesn't work without an internet connection, and the interface isn't great. The primary product is the watch, so it's not a dealbreaker, but it annoys me. XD
Other cons: gesture responsiveness (responsive enough, but only just—and if you turn up the sensitivity it's too sensitive; and not instantaneous), sleep tracking (which I don't care about, but if you do, this watch is very bad at it).
