vriddy: Sakura from Wind Breaker pointing at himself (me?)
[personal profile] vriddy
I did a first round of editing to the end, and while in my head the last chapter was clunky (probably because I've changed direction on it about 3 times now), actually I was giggling and hiding my mouth behind my hand through most of it so I think it's okay :D The final sentence/paragraph however is clunky and doesn't work super well, but I have a bit of time to figure out something else.

Each chapter has a different PoV as each character figure some things out, and I like the story and how they all gravitate toward each other. However, the tone and narration are a bit distant, maybe a bit flat. It's the same mistake? flaw? that I saw in my OT3/multi-polyship Kn8 fic, where I was also spending a lot of brain power on "How would these characters fit together?". Maybe this is expected for the first few fics with a new ship. When I compare with DabiHawks for which I've written well over 100 fics (and over 200 with Hawks!), obviously I can't nail every nuance and subtlety of their emotions as easily. Yet. Anyway I still think there's good in there and I'm happy I wrote this :D I enjoy these characters so much.

Acting on instinct | Wind Breaker | Sakura/Nirei/Suou/Kiryuu/Tsugeura | 2.8k words (WIP, 3/5) | rated T

Summary: Something shifted for them all in that moment at Kiryuu's house. They all felt it. But Kiryuu was missing for it, so they can't do anything about it.

Not yet.

The Edge Of Sleep

I recently watched The Edge Of Sleep, a television series from Mark Fischbach (a.k.a. Markiplier on YouTube) which was adapted from a fictional podcast series he did of the same name. It's only one season since that's all what the podcast has, although I read that a second season of the podcast is written and ready to go, but it hasn't been recorded yet. For the show, it premiered on Amazon Prime in 2024 and then was later made available to watch on Tubi, you can also watch it for free on YouTube which is where I ended up viewing it.

You'd better stay awake. Because if you fall asleep...you're fucked. )

I haven't listened to the podcast, though I read a bit of what the show leaves out so I'm interested to see what the differences are and how the narrative works between the two mediums the story is told in. There's also a novel based on the podcast too, so that'll be on the list as well. In addition to all of this, Mark recently had a movie come out in theaters, Iron Lung, based off of a video game of the same name, which is something I'm also curious in checking out. Needless to say, his career trajectory is going incredibly well and I'm really proud of him.

"Wild Rock"

Takashima Kazusa, 2001

MangaUpdates
MyAnimeList
Chill Chill

Summary:
Wild Rock takes place in a prehistoric setting. The first story is about a boy, Yuuen, who is asked by his tribal chief father to seduce Emba (a great hunter and the next chief of the rival Lakeside clan) by pretending to be a female so that they can get more food. The other stories are in the same setting, but with different characters (including the fathers of both characters from the main story when they were young).

My comments: The newer JP cover is better!

Kind of insta-lovey? I wish we were shown more of them together before Yuuen thought about being in love with Emba. Just because someone's kind and saved you doesn't mean you love them. I think the second couple was more believable because they didn't talk about love but they clearly had a connection. I loved both couples very much though. The art is amazing.

I'm glad I got to reread this and will be keeping it.

I had to bend the spine to read some of the text bubbles. Not many sfx were translated.

2010 BookCrossing Review: Reread! Everything was pretty much as I remembered it. The setting really makes this an even more fun read. I like the story of the clan heads when they were young a lot too, and I like to think that now that the clans are united, they can still be friends or even lovers again (it didn't say if their wives were still alive). 10/10

"1-nen C-gumi Yoshida Kakari /
First Year Class C Yoshida Representative"

Sakurai Shiori, 2011

MangaUpdates
MyAnimeList

Summary:
Tsukishima Taiyou dreams of having a peaceful high school life, but he is assigned to take care of a classmate, the handsome and popular Yoshida Yuu. By spending time with Yuu, Taiyou starts to realize that Yuu seems to be hiding a big secret.

My comments: Does Yuu have DID? Is there something supernatural going on? Is 'she' crossdressing? Twist: Rei and Yuu are twins, and Rei got tired of being seen as her brother so she gave up, and Yuu made her go to switch places with him regularly to go to school. Taiyou is the only one who pays enough attention to realize there are two people. There relationship is very much 'annoyance' and 'caretaker' since one of them is lazy and they constantly have people drooling over home. Maybe if I'd rather this a long time ago the twist would've hit harder. It was nice enough.

Because it came up when I was talking to my dad yesterday, and I remembered I meant to post it here and then forgot - if you haven't seen the Super Bowl halftime show this year, you should watch it. Even if you don't know who Bad Bunny is, or aren't into his style of music. The level of sheer technical skill involved in the staging is next-level, and he very much had a point he wanted to make and most certainly made it.

Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show

And if you are interested, someone one Bluesky shared their Bad Bunny 101 write-up, which has links to a bunch of other articles and listening suggestions. Reggaeton is probably not gonna be one of my top genres personally, but I feel like it's good to get out of my listening confort zone and try new things, particularly when it's like, a global phenomenon right now.

Lovely to see you... go... <3

A year ago I was prepping for lots of meetings, learning about putting passwords on OneNote tabs (which I don't think I've thought about since!), cleaning out the cutlery drawer, and exploring a new area in GoW:R.

Today I allowed myself a longer lie in and felt better for it. Then I put a load of washing in the machine and did breakfast. After that, I hoovered the living room floor and cleaned the bathroom and toilet, and then collapsed into my armchair with a cuppa.

Daughter and kidlings survived the bus journey in one piece. Their bus drops them off at the other end of Hope Street and Younger Grandson walked most of the way - they have a little sit-on thing attached to the pram if he needs it. Both kids were full-on as usual. Granddaughter has decided that licking people's faces is a fun thing - no idea why! She pulled faces when she tried lemon cheesecake, but YG enjoyed it. GD also had a go at cleaning the coffee table, which got covered in cheese, using a whole handful of wipes. Daughter suggested accessories for her baby doll - crib, pram, etc.

Mother survived her trip to the dentist, which lasted over 2 hours! She's a post-war baby, so her teeth are low on calcium. I've never known her have any problems but the last couple of years she seems to have had a lot of work done. If I'd realised she was going for more than a check-up I would have suggested they come tomorrow, even though I'm really glad we got all the family stuff done today! They're having problems with their new smart meter. British Gas are getting the readings but the meter itself says 'no data', or something like that. They've raised it with BG but don't seem to be getting anywhere. They wanted the address for Money Box - some sort of consumer rights service from the BBC...?

After a late dinner, and a quick trip to the shop, I settled down to some Granblue Fantasy. Chapter 8 was the Chapter of the Bosses! Thankfully, you get healed in between - and I'm guessing there are checkpoints even if there aren't specific save points. I am so glad I put the auto-battle thing on - combat is chaotic enough! I'm now heading for the end of Chapter 9 - the characters are talking about the final battle, which would make Chapter 10 what happens after...?

The boys and I watched the final of Traitors: Ireland, which was strangely anti-climactic, and I've watched some random stuff on YT. And now it's time for bed.

this is the last one! a bit of a catch-all post for the remaining songs. this one was fun for me because it got me thinking about what position each song has in the narrative of the movie. there are the in-universe hit singles ("how it's done", "soda pop"). there are also songs that operate more as a musical number and may or may not be diagetic/in-universe for the characters ("free", "what it sounds like"). it's much easier to think of similar recommendations for songs that are designed to be singles, rather than songs that build on an entire movie musical's worth of narrative and emotional context. it became an interesting exercise!

what it sounds like

speaking of songs that function purely as a plot-important musical number! there are a lot of songs that say "you can do this!" or even "i know it's been hard, but i believe in you", but it feels harder to find a song that says "i'm broken and i've messed up but i find beauty in the broken glass" in such a personal way. originally, i wasn't even going to try recommending songs for this one, but then i happened to see "howl" in one of my personal playlists while working on recs for one of the other songs. it made me realize there's another angle: cathartic songs that came out after the artists went through some shit.

there is no actual playlist here because the proposed songs here require so much context that it didn't make sense to make one without accompanying explanations. (my friend joked that you'd need the director's commentary version for the full experience.) this has sort of ended up being a collection of songs that make me emotional, but we don't need to get into all that.

"Howl" by Chuu

chuu's first release as a solo artist after she went through a lot of strife to leave her former company, which had removed her from her group, loona. a song about feeling safe.

♥ The daffodils are up!!

picture )

♥ And irises, my favorite.

picture )

♥ Plus a fun mystery: I'm like 80% sure I planted crocuses here. Before yesterday I was 100% sure, but what's coming up does not look like crocuses. What will these clever sprouts turn out to be, I wonder. (Scilla?)

picture )

And now a spring planting calendar update.

♥ Dahlias were potted March 5. The first one stuck its head above soil today and I quickly transferred it from the dark floor of the utility room to a bright succulent shelf. (In other words, I continue to not plan lights for the dahlias.)

It has been one week since they were potted. Nine weeks remain until our frost-free date. For everyone's entertainment and my hope of making better decisions next year, I am tracking dahlia size versus time remaining before they can go outside.

picture )

♥ Cannas remain in boxes by the back door. No substantive growth I can see; I'm checking them every few days. Temperature is higher than I'd like but steady between 55-60F. Anything below 60 seems to keep them sleeping. Garage temperature was freezing last night and will probably go colder next week, so not yet a better option. If they can stay dormant until the ground unfreezes, I should be able to put most of them in front of the patio where they were last year and let them wake up naturally in May.

♥ Winter sown seeds seem to be behaving themselves, no early germination or wild parties that I've noticed. The containers were seeded Feb 18-21, so it's been about three weeks. At least some of the seeds in there need cold stratification, and I think four weeks is the bare minimum for forcing. For most seeds, 6-12 weeks is recommended. Fortunately it's going to be cold next week, so they'll definitely get their four. After that I'll keep them out of the sun until the end of March and hope for the best.

♥ The six boxes of bulbs I bought accidentally, thinking I would "winter sow" them, have been in the refrigerator for four weeks this weekend. At this rate they should be okay to go in the ground as soon as it unfreezes enough to dig. Whew. (They all require cold stratification, but only to bloom, so even if they don't get enough cold they should be able to put up some leaves and collect energy for next year.)

In unrelated news, Marci and I went to the aquarium yesterday and we both got t-shirts with a manta ray on them that say "just a ray of sunshine." I left mine on the sofa last night and Daphne has been sleeping on it ever since.

Okay, Mama took more, buuuuuuuuuuuuut I did drag his ass home!!!!!

and I am not complaining about the bonus fs2 Jun!!

Um, I don't have a lot else to talk about because I've just been in 24/7 Pokopia cycle...I definitely feel like it was worth buying a Switch 2 for and, as much as I hate to suggest dropping that much money on something, I highly recommend it. I finished that "story" of it and cried at the end, so like. idk. I don't have smart words right now because I'm hungry ;w;

I also took a bunch of screenshots while playing, because it's soooooooo fuckin cute and I wanna make icons of everything *w* But there's also sooooo much to do that I get overwhelmed, so I'm thinking of sitting down and making a Plan for each area instead of just running wild. I wanna make some nice towns!!!

ohhh my god right I named the area you can customize Double Face, because I'm weak
