Who's the Murderer s6
Although I initially jumped into the show for Zhang Xincheng, this has sort of become my emotional support LARP variety show. XD It's a lot more enjoyable the more you watch it, as you get more familiar with the regular players, the inside jokes, and their relationships. My favorite part is always the final voting of each case where everyone privately casts their vote for who they think the murderer is, and explains their reasoning to the camera. But I got really attached to the regular players, including Sasa, who I initially disliked because I found his humor too slapstick. It's just really fun to see "veterans" be extremely comfortable with each other, and Zhang Xincheng (the new kid) get more comfortable with both the game and his seniors. I also like the cases best when they go ham with the plot. I truly wasn't expecting to see bodyswap, space/time bubbles that led to complicated time mechanics, and aliens, so I'm very delighted.
My favorite S6 case was case#5, with the town of sad people. It got a bit dark (suicide, depression, trauma, and some horror), but the puzzles were satisfying and I felt that the characters were the most compelling, with very funny banter and puns. (Unsurprisingly this is one of the episodes that ZXC is in, and my favorite role for him. XD)
Games
Sadly I wasn't able to play any games during the holidays, but I did get to do a virtual escape room withMovember Virtual Moscape (link)
Although it is called an escape room, it's actually the opposite of that, since what we did was INFILTRATE. :D One can do it solo but it's a pain to switch between screens, so playing it with at least one friend is best. To play as a team, you can either enter the virtual room individually and just simultaneously play the game, or have one person screenshare their playthrough. We decided to go the screenshare route because I had internet problems—luna screenshared the playthrough and entered all the solutions, while I screenshared my interactions with a character. You need a Facebook/Messenger account for the interactive portion, but you're not talking to a real person, so it's FINE.
The first half of the game was Puzzles I Did Not Like To Do (decoding stuff, reading instructions, and sometimes Googling—I was very happy to just listen to luna do everything). The second half was a lot more interactive (talking to an AI on Messenger), with Puzzles I Was Happy To Be Part Of (examining sceneries, unlocking hidden doors, figuring out the passwords, choose your own adventure, and some internet sleuthing).
The game design and experience were really impressive, with an effort to be accessible. They had real websites and Facebook accounts that you had to scour for clues, and very cool visualizations that I associate more with console games (luna particularly had the time with her life rotating the 3D object). You alternate between entering answers in the main room, which is a virtual desktop computer, and messaging the results of your investigation to your fictional colleague. For the color-coded portion, there is an alternate chart for the colorblind (we aren't colorblind, but we referred to it anyway), as well as the option to turn on video captions. The Youtube videos only have auto-generated captions, but you get messaged a recap/summary of the information that was in the video.
Gameplay is estimated to be 90 minutes, but there's no time limit. It took us more than 2 hours since there were only 2 of us and my connection kept dropping.
Tools: we used an internet browser for the game, Discord for voicecall and screenshare, and Facebook/Messenger to interact with a fictional character.

tried to translate the most evocative parts of the version of 曾經我也想過一了百了 (I Also Thought About Ending It All) that Zhang Xincheng covered for Who’s the Murderer! the pre-chorus imagery has been rattling in my head all month pic.twitter.com/798jCMmSSI

Date: 2022-01-19 06:35 am (UTC)I loved how deeply personal and internal the conflicts in the Sad Town case was, it had such strong emotional beats and I agree that it was beautifully balanced between gloomy and fun (and also really creepy—I watched it at night and had to stop when Wu Xin started talking to the lights)! I absolutely died when DZW bluescreened and everyone was cross-examining him at the same time. 😂 I also felt that the puzzles (especially the 小白船 password) and revelations in that specific case were all very organic, atmospheric, and emotional! I was worried about He laoshi’s character but they handled that so compassionately. And Sasa advocating for the destigmatization of depression and comparing it to any other illness was so unexpected and moving. ;A;
Do you have any other favorite cases? So I know if I have more to look forward to haha I’m trying to watch Who’s the Murderer from S1 but the episodes for the later seasons are so long 😂
(PS. Hello, I loved your translation of known, unknown and am very happy to find you still active and on DW! I should get around reading Murderbot someday…)

Date: 2022-01-20 11:13 am (UTC)This is gonna sound ridiculous but… the S6 finale two-parter was the first episode of Murderer I ever watched LMAO. Initially as semi-background noise while doing other stuff because I was curious to see more 双北 aka He+Sa content, but then I got invested despite also being confused and went to watch S6 from the start. Followed by S1, then I got partway through S2 before being distracted by other shiny things? I think?
I'm pretty sure my initial review of this ep was "10/10 more sensitive handling of mental health issues than any english crime procedural ever" and I still stand by that, which is pretty impressive given the tendency of this show to slide into crack territory without any warning whatsoever. Though safe to say this is not the only episode of Murderer that should not be watched at night lmao. DZW is possibly my fave non-regular for the sheer enjoyable chaos he brings, and also being totally chill with He and Sa (unlike the younger guests who I feel still tend to maintain some level of respect for their laoshi-ness?)
There is more good stuff in the future, even in the S1 + half-S2 I watched! Featuring the Titanic, a NIF parody, and He-laoshi climbing on a table to T-pose. Though not all at once. Anyway I've also been meaning to watch more of it despite my short attention span, so feel free to @ me anytime if you ever want someone to watch along with! The only other fan I knew before this was one (1) tumblr mutual so I have thoroughly enjoyed lol-ing at your livetweets of it (I'm
angerylab over there and we definitely have overlapping social circles haha).
And I'm glad to hear you liked that translation! 10/10 labour of love though I would not do it again, how did I even manage to finish it the first time. Pretty sure I have a terminal case of fandom though, there's no exit on that one…

Yeah, there was a lot going on, and I was pretty nervous when they referenced other movies, but they handled it more sincerely than I ever expected. And the suicide storyline was really chilling because it felt so real.
I feel the same way about DZW, he is such a mood and is very refreshing! I really enjoy the “normal” players who don’t bother pretending to pay attention to the very detailed analyses. XD You’re right about him being chill. He’s also one of the older players and he’s not out to impress anyone haha, and I think his presence makes the younger/newer ones feel more comfortable too.
NiF parody
OMGGGGGGGGGG I’m so excited 😭😭😭 it helps SO much that the early season cases are much shorter, though that also means I’m less invested in them haha.
I’m so happy to find someone who’s also into Who’s the Murderer and is similarly a latecomer! Which means that when season 7 drops, I’ll have someone to yell with (especially since we don’t have to watch AN ENTIRE SEASON’s worth of backlog and can just take it one case at a time 😂)
ARE YOU WATCHING RESET, the Daylight Entertainment drama featuring Bai Jingting, because my brain is just full Murderer mode when I watch it 😂
(sjsjkskssps it was SO long, one of the projects I wasn’t sure would be completed for very reasonable reasons. 😂 Sometimes being able to put out something that big is enough of an experience 😂)

Date: 2022-01-21 07:42 am (UTC)Ironically that banter was probably one of the major selling points for me, so perhaps starting with the finale was the best choice after all LOL
There's definitely a trade-off between length vs depth of story, but I would have 100% given up if S1 was as long as S6 omg. My attention span is too limited for this!! But yes watching episode-by-episode will be much more manageable, cue staring unblinkingly at Mango TV until they drop S7.
Oh I know about Reset but only because Zhou Shen sang for it, didn't realise Baibai was in it though! I haven't seen him in anything else besides Murderer either so I think my brain would totally be on the same mode too…
(In retrospect I think it helped that my fave parts of the fic were near or after the ending so I was determined to get there? But as a reader I'd totally have put it under the "WIP do not read until finished" box lmao)
