Who's the Murderer S1 eps 10-?
  • Apparently I stopped midway through the Jackson Wang + Avengers ep and I'm picking it up again two(!) years later because I still haven't cancelled my Mango subscription... Though I really should just cancel and watch it on Youtube since there will be no music to delete, unlike in Time Concert. XD Also, English subs!

    Watching the early seasons hits different now that I know that a lot of the original cast just aren't returning for various reasons that I found out at various points this year. ;__; There seemed to be massive drama among the core MXDZT regulars/crew (outside of the Sasa thing, which everyone is very understanding about), and Guigui got blacklisted for expressing the "wrong" political opinions (I always assumed she couldn't return because of the pandemic + scheduling). ;__;

  • Now starting the Republican ep with--I think--Aaron Yan??? Again, feeling complicated about this because I can't un-know his crimes and wish I'd watched this ep on the year it came out, and not in 2024… He’s also gonna be in the upcoming (BL?) science fiction miniseries Q18 Quantum Dice: Allegory of the Quantum (trailer link) directed by Zero Chou (Spider Lilies, Handsome Stewardess). I'm a bit curious about the premise anyway.

成何體統 How Dare You eps 1-6
Novel-based transmigration donghua that's still airing on iQiyi: A corporate slave finds herself isekai'd into the part of a minor villain in the webnovel she was skimming, and finds the tyrannical Emperor on the same boat.

This one has het romance and more moving parts (multiple transmigrated characters that have funny indicators that they belong in the real world). Unfortunately it also has, idk, the fantasy martial arts equivalent of a fat suit, which was annoying because it almost successfully subverted trope expectations before it dropped that revelation.

I kinda want to watch on to see what the in-universe FL ends up doing, but mostly I just had the urge to read Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (fantranslation), which I guess I'm doing now. The way my attention span works, though, is that I'll read a few chapters for a day and then start something new the following day.

當我飛奔向你 When I Fly Towards You eps 1-2
NGL I mostly listened to this like an audio drama... and it certainly works as an audio drama. XD I also only put this on because I misremembered Zhou Yiran (周依然) being in this, but instead I got Zhou Yiran (周翊然) who I'm less interested in. orz

I guess it's a pretty good youth drama (a lot of shenanigans, all very low-stakes), but as usual I'm unimpressed by the romance setups + I believe the girls are too good and cute for the boys... The episode titles being lyrics of old tunes made me hope for musical tie-ins, which obviously did not happen. XD They also made me wonder if music licenses are more expensive these days or have to account for all the different platforms? Or maybe these ones just weren't as integral to the plot as the great Eason Chan roadtrip in My Huckleberry Friends… But even With You had scenes of 晴天 (I think!) playing through Liu Haoran’s headphones, and the students joyfully breaking out to 龍捲風 and neither of those was particularly relevant, just vibes… Sugarman Media is big on retaining nostalgic references though so maybe they were just determined to have the music. 😂

Can't believe I've churned out enough ZXC things that my Dreamwidth can't keep up, but it looks like I never posted my 曾經我也想過一了百了 (Who's the Murderer 7 concert version) subs/translation here?! It's my first and best attempt at translating a full song, and it's been killing me that Youtube keeps blocking my video for copyright. Turns out it was blocking the video, not the audio, and the solution was simply to... make a lyric video... SO!!!!!!! Here are the original softsubbed video I did for Vimeo, the ~English lyrics video~ I did for Youtube, and [twitter.com profile] yjthecat/[tumblr.com profile] fwoopersongs's translation for reference and comparison.

曾經我也想過一了百了 (Who's the Murderer 7 concert performance)

Back in February I made a ~Zhang Xincheng performance cut~ from the Who's the Murderer 7 Spring Festival 2022 concert. Official subs have since come out, but I have very strong feelings about the song.

曾經我也想過一了百了 (Who's the Murderer 7 concert) [LYRIC VIDEO]

Here's the lyric video I created today by importing the subtitle file and freezing the frames from the original video. And then adding, because I could, ~*extra effects*~ including some tacky falling petals, to give the stills a sense of motion. I also applied a gradient layer so the video is darker at the bottom and the subs (in plain white text) are actually readable.

Extra footage and effects are from Videezy (free, with attribution) and Pixabay (free, no attribution required). Some GIFs because unnecessary labor begets more unnecessary promotional labor, you have to milk these things:

I also typed up my translation here on Tumblr so it's all in text form.

    Other Notes:

  • I initially mistranslated 荧幕 (TV screen) as "computer screen" (the original JP the word was パソコン, which does mean computer, and I assumed the Chinese would be the same); I have corrected this with the help of [tumblr.com profile] fwoopersongs's translation and detailed translation notes of the same song—you can read it all here on Tumblr, or watch their subbed video here (which also has the Chinese lyrics and pinyin):

  • 泪光中微笑的你: [tumblr.com profile] fwoopersongs and I have very different readings of this line haha. I’m not sure if it’s grammatically sensible to read the tears as belonging to the narrator, but this is an assumption I made from context: 1) the last 3 lines felt like they were all pertaining to an outsider reaching in, 2) I thought it was a callback to the first chorus, where the narrator was talking about unstoppable tears.

I translated it as It was your smile that I could see through my tears while YJ/fwoopersongs translated it as You, in that vast sea of people, you smile through your tears, which also makes sense emotionally, especially for Zhang Xincheng’s character in that Who’s the Murderer case, so I’m leaving both options here. (I trust YJ way more than I trust me though, haha)

  • Found out while doing the thumbnail for the lyric video that I lost most of my fonts during my 6+ months of computer issues (which are still ongoing, but I've rolled back and bandaided my problem). Now I'm sad. :((((((((((

March was just a fog of Zhang Xincheng-related output and I can't be bothered to link them all here. It was also my cousin's wedding, so I spent some time low-key fretting over it. I got my booster shot and a hair cut, and then my sister-in-law tried one of those bubble dyes on me. My hair is so fine that she got to do 2 separate applications on me, but the color didn't really take haha. Due to logistical reasons, we actually ended up skipping the actual wedding (which apparently had several mishaps) and only attended the reception, which was an outdoor one and more intimate than I feared and expected. At one point the wind toppled down a small tree, which landed on a table (no one was hurt, so it was funny).

    Media

    Turning Red (2022)
I'm not sure how much I enjoyed this one because I don't enjoy coming-of-age stories and this had all the coming-of-age beats, but it was CUTE and well-executed--the visual build-up and play on scale were masterful, as was every single beat of the boyband storyline. I was a lot more interested in the mother's generation, and loved how much backstory and personality was informed through the animation and the designs. It's really interesting to me because, though accessible to all, the movie inhabits a specifically millenial space, in between Mei's and Ming's generation as though we are both of them, and I felt this most at the bamboo forest scene towards the end.

I didn't realize it when I was watching, but I learned from this review (video/podcast format; h/t [twitter.com profile] lunarflares) that the movie used a lot of color language to depict relationships. (I haven't finished that episode, it gets deeply personal among the hosts, but the general discussions happen in the first 30-60 minutes).

In terms of relatability, this definitely was not for me even though I recognized so much of Mei's teenagerhood haha. I think, partly, it's because of the setting: I was always an Asian among Asians, and while I have completely severed most of my connections, I grew up in Chinese communities. But also, I just was not Mei. XD And I had no desire to gyrate LMAO. But I did recognize so many people in Mei, which made her all the more enjoyable.

    Who's the Murderer S7
Due to Deng Lun's tax evasion reveal, the puppet episode sequel that he was meant to be in was cancelled like... a day before it was meant to air??? I'm still mourning the set and the costumes and Qi Wei's appearance. They promptly aired the first part of the following episode (NZND as Old Boys) instead, but they... have not released the second half of the episode. Who's The Murderer and several other variety shows have suspended broadcast for two weeks after that. I'm not sure how much of it is related to Deng Lun, but it certainly feels huge; viewer comments that were initially sympathetic and understanding became angry the following week. (It certainly seems like they meant to release the episode, and were trying to, but something behind the scenes was happening. The "no episode this week" announcements were made around an hour before the scheduled airtime.

EPISODE 5 (which also had Deng Lun, pre-cancellation) WAS REALLY GOOD THOUGH!!!

    Delicious Romance
Technically finished this on April, I just want to get this out of the way. XD

Main thoughts: I loved eps 1-6 and then 11-15, and in some ways I do love the messaging about still being a work in progress at 30; but sometimes the messaging didn’t fit the situation, and its perspective of work is still kinda… teenager-ish. I dislike most of Fang Xin's career storyline (which makes her relationship with her younger female coworkers antagonistic, instead of acknowledging that they're both victims of the corporate system and bad leadership), and eventually Liu Jing's. I... actually don't know how I'm meant to read Liu Jing. Emotionally it feels like she's meant to succeed, but logically, going by her conversations with her own parents and Song Chao's friend, it looks like she's setting herself up for failure. The latter would have been interesting to me, though, because I love the idea of having the freedom to fail.

The strongest relationship of this show was easily the Xia Meng/Wang Jichong storyline, a long-term couple that, due to their work and pandemic living conditions, broke up and had to learn to grow without each other. I feel that they could have pushed Xia Meng's growth and self-realization further since she has the highest amount of accumulated insecurities among the three characters, but the show is open-ended enough that I can accept it.

The best part was definitely ALL the child actors, from Wenwen (my favorite), to the child versions of the trio who were cast and directed so well I could see them in the adult versions and vice versa. And also the scene at the divorce registration queue which is what sold me to this show.

THIS SHOW CONTAINS: body/weight issues, fad diets and disordered eating, sexual harassment (several times, verbal and, at one point, physical), A LOT of fun meta about cdramas, a pointed portrayal about how marriage shouldn't be the default expectation from women, canon LGBT characters.

    Currently:

Reading: a bunch of things but due to my focus/reading issues, I have temporarily dropped everything /o\

Playing: I spent 3 straight days losing myself in short mobile puzzle games (Monument Valley, and Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise) and just now resurfaced. XD

Watching: Starting Under The Skin (crime/forensics cdrama) next!

Wanted to document my thoughts for each episode since this is all I've been watching (apart from groupwatches; presently watching Delicous Romance). Last season due to Wang Ou's schedule and Guigui's?? situation??? there was a shortage of women (it's really sad to me when there's only one woman in a case), but this season they got more women to commit.

    S7 changes:
  • notable absences: Sasa, Bai Jingting, Guigui (is she ever coming back!!!), Wei Daxun, the rest of the NZND
  • new continuity: a Sasa message/"cameo" in each ep, with the detectives "chasing" after his shadow from universe to universe... feels a bit like Doctor Who XD
  • no gold bars, just detective badges, which I think is sad
  • each episode now ends with guest lawyers talking about the crimes and their corresponding punishment (I think! I never watch these haha)

Episode 0: A Party for Detectives

    OFFICIAL SUBS FINALLY OUT here

Players: He Jiong (moderator/GM), Da Zhangwei, Qiao Zhenyu, Qi Wei, Wang Ou, Wei Chen, Wu Xin, Yang Rong, Zhang Xincheng

Season-opener party game! The premise: two thieves are planted among the detectives. The detectives must figure out who the thieves are and find a way to prevent them from stealing the gold bars. The thieves must steal all the gold bars from a locked vault. I really loved the episode, it was so fun and cathartic, with complex, layered maneuverings from the thieves! The game runs for around an hour. It's mostly a tabletop game but has the full satisfaction of a heist movie, 10/10.

Episode 1: Fairy Tale Academy Graduation

Players: He Jiong (detective), Da Zhangwei, Qi Wei, Wei Chen, Yang Rong, Zhang Ruoyun

Fairy Tale/Disney episode, with a little bit of HP in its setup. The individual investigations in this ep came across as really lonely to me because they were in a massive mansion, and had to spread out significantly—He Jiong couldn't holler at Da Zhangwei to come over from across the set, he had to send over his assistant (whose name I don't know, sorry!) to fetch him. :( But the secret room and some of the puzzles really felt like a level higher than they normally are! And they maximize the space for the murder and the mechanisms used to fake the time of death.

I hope Yang Rong wins MVP for this case, she did so well in figuring out the relevant details!!! She's one of my favorite players because her approach is more empathetic and situational than analytical (which is not a bad thing to be, but there's no shortage of analytical players in the show), and it benefits the team dynamic by spreading out the focus.

Favorite moments: Zhang Ruoyun inspecting the crime scene and He Jiong fondly saying that that's Sasa's thing

Contains: Bullying, forced kissing between two unwilling parties

    Episode 2: Rooftop Apartment

Players: Da Zhangwei (detective), He Jiong, Wei Chen, Wang Ou, Wu Xin, Zhang Ruoyun, Pu Yixing (detective's assistant)

A case about insomniacs who live in the same building and the power of memory. Hilarious because Da Zhangwei is not good at detecting but he never puts on any pretenses. The second half was fun because of the science fiction reveals, and because a lot of the mysteries were in He Jiong's room, and everyone had to work together to find the clues before he could answer them.

Favorite moments: Da Zhangwei asking Wang Ou why she moved to this building, and Wang Ou pointing out that she just explained it

Contains: Domestic abuse and manipulation, DZW making an ill-advised colorist joke (Wu Xin makes him cut it out)

    Episode 3: Lantern Festival Episode

Players: Yang Rong (detective), Da Zhangwei, He Jiong, Qiao Zhenyu, Wang Ou, Zhang Ruoyun, Guo Wentao (detective's assistant)

A pseudo-historical fantasy case about characters from three different kingdoms (one of which got destroyed). Tbh I fell asleep through most of this episode because my vocab isn't broad enough for this setting and all the damn letters LOL. But this was a pretty cool and compact mystery featuring interesting devices: the murder occurs while they're all solving Lantern Festival riddles.

Favorite moments (before I slept through the rest XD): 7 stabs

Contains: War, the pillage and destruction of an entire nation

    Episode 4: Sugar Storm

Players: Qiao Zhenyu (detective), Da Zhangwei, He Jiong, Yang Rong, Zhang Ruoyun, Zhang Tian'ai (new player), Guo Wentao (detective's assistant)

A murder in 1996! IMO this is the most immersive case so far even though the plot and the characters aren't innately interesting. Maybe it's the setting and how fun the singalongs are? Yang Rong is absolutely luminous in this, and Zhang Tian'ai is very graceful, focused, and unfazed in spite of this being her first time on the show. The puzzle of the lock was very cool, the discussions/arguments were very productive, and it felt that everyone was actively solving and putting together different sections of the mystery instead of He Jiong carrying the investigation.

    Favorite moments: SO MANY:
  • 90's karaoke (甜蜜蜜 & 美酒与咖啡)
  • on Zhang Ruoyun's BGM
  • Zhang Tian'ai playing herself
  • Zhang Tian'ai zeroing in on how crucial the window is and laying out a scenario where He Jiong is the murderer without hesitation (idk this was just really attractive, I feel that people don't confront He laoshi enough haha)
  • 30-second compilation of Yang Rong being [insert fire emoji]—she goes from "你猜 (✿◕‿◕)" to "你猜 (ʘ‿ʘ)ノ✿", it's AMAZING.

Contains: Domestic abuse, childhood abduction trauma

Getting weepy just writing about it!!!! :((((

HAPPY NEW YEAR!, I would like to immortalize this top-tier New Year's greeting, from one Zhang Xincheng fan to another:

I spent parts of January trying to declutter both my room and my mind from the negative thoughts and urges I didn't want to carry into the new year, but didn't quite succeed. However! I managed to organize my cables/adapters, and have been clinging to the single habit of putting them away, even as I accumulate disorder everywhere else. It's nice to have that one thing, at least! And to be able to know where my earphones and chargers are.

(I also bought little jewelry pouches for my necklaces to prevent them from getting lost, tangled, or tarnished.)
